Super Bowl Coin Toss History

So what has history shown us for a bet that's a true 50/50 proposition? Through the first 59 Super Bowls, tails holds a slight edge with 31 wins, while heads has come up 28 times.

That said, this means absolutely nothing. It's a literal coin flip – completely random, with a 50% probability on each side. Past results offer no context or predictive value for what's coming next.

One interesting (and slightly ironic) tidbit, though: the team that wins the coin toss has actually lost more Super Bowls than it has won. Coin toss winners have claimed just 25 of the 59 Super Bowls played, a win rate of only 42.4%.

How to Analyze and Approach Super Bowl Coin Toss Odds

To be blunt, one of the most ridiculous things you can do as a bettor is place a wager on either heads or tails at a price worse than +100. If you're laying -101, -102, or anything like that, you're voluntarily paying juice on a literal coin flip.

Honestly, you'd be better off finding a friend willing to take the opposite side and betting them straight up instead. Why subject yourself to laying juice on a 50/50 proposition? It's the most absurd bet sportsbooks offer, yet people continue to make it year after year.

Now, maybe you don't have someone willing to take your action, or they won't match the amount you want to wager. In that case, you're stuck dealing with recreational sportsbooks – and if that's the route you're going, the bare minimum you can do is shop around.

At least one sportsbook is offering even money on both sides, while most others are hanging prices in the -103 to -105 range. If you feel compelled to bet the coin flip and can't find someone to take the other side, do yourself a favor and hunt for the best odds available.

Is Heads or Tails the Best Super Bowl Coin Toss Bet?

I'm a tried-and-true "tails never fails" guy. That's it. That's the analysis. I'll always ride with tails on a coin flip.

There's no deeper context to offer because, frankly, what context could there possibly be? It's a literal coin flip. There is zero analysis that goes into the outcome.

Whatever side you choose, I hope it works out for you…unless you're laying vig on this bet. In that case, honestly, you probably deserve to lose.
