While Tom Brady steered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Super Bowl success in his first season following his departure from the New England Patriots, his former team did not take too well to life without him.

All good things must come to an end, and Brady’s time with the Patriots had run its course. But while Brady showed he could still be a prominent part of a championship-winning club (and thoroughly enjoy the spoils of victory as well), the Patriots stumbled to a 7-9 record without him. The drop-off ended a run of 11 straight AFC East titles and 11 straight trips to the NFL playoffs, and it was the first time the Patriots had a losing season since 2000, Bill Belichick’s first season in Foxboro.

Will 2021 bring a return to prominence for the Patriots? They were a very busy team in the offseason, making a number of moves designed to hasten their rebuild. But preseason NFL futures odds don’t see a quick return to the top, as the Patriots find themselves in the middle of the pack, at best. A run at a postseason berth could be in the cards, but quarterback play, whether it is veteran Cam Newton or rookie Mac Jones, will make or break the Patriots. Last year, it was one of the things that broke them, as Newton struggled with injury, illness, and ineffectiveness.

Over the last two decades, the Patriots have shown numerous times that writing them off is a dangerous move, but that was partly due to Brady’s presence. In the present, they have their work cut out for them to finish ahead of two rising teams, the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, in the AFC East and return to the postseason.
