Sunday Night Baseball, Mets vs Cubs: Prediction & Best Bets (6/23)

The Cubs and Mets battle tonight on ESPN to settle this series once and for all. Out in Wrigley Field on a Sunday Night in Chicago, this series is all tied up at one game a piece with the finale tonight on national television. The Mets obliterated the Cubbies in game 1, winning 11-1, with all 12 runs happening in the first four innings. Last night, we saw almost the exact opposite, as the Cubs jumped out to a 6-0 lead after just 3 innings. Chicago eventually won the game 8-1, evening the series at one.

Now the entire regular season series is also tied up at 3-3, so the winner of tonight's game walks away the overall season series winner. The Mets and Cubs are both 4th in their respective divisions, although the Cubs have a better shot at overtaking the title being just 7 games back from 1st place.

Can the Cubbies make it two straight wins at Wrigley? Or will the Mets walk away with a sneaky victory?

Can the Mets Stay Hot Against the Cubs on the Road?

The Mets were recently the hottest team in baseball. They've lost two out of their last three, but prior to that they had won 7 straight and 11 of their L13. But they do have to face the Cubs at home who are 22-17 at home this season. Luis Severino is coming off a rough outing, but he did pitch well against the Cubs back in April.

Severino pitched 8 innings against the Cubs, giving up just 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 5 batters. But again, that was in late April. His most recent outing was very bad. Severino pitched 6.1 innings against the Rangers giving up 6 runs on 8 hits, including 2 home runs. He's allowed home runs in each of his L2 starts, and has allowed earned runs in all but one of his starts this year. But, he is still facing the Cubs at Wrigley.

Now the Mets are one of the best hitting teams on the road this year, but Javier Assad has been solid recently. He hasn't had a win since the middle of May, and despite the Cubs losing the game, Assad pitched great against the Mets. He went 5 innings allowing just one run on 5 hits without a walk as well. Assad has faced some very tough lineups this year, and I don't think he should have much to worry about against the Mets at Wrigley.

We are being chalky and taking the Cubs at Wrigley Field against Severino tonight. The man was shelled against the Rangers, and although he pitched well against this Cubs lineup, that was a long time ago. The second time facing a team is always more difficult since the hitters are more aware of what to expect, and this could be a turning point for the Cubs.

Chicago was once just a game out of 1st place in the NL Central and now they are 7 games back in 4th place. They have been slipping for the past month or so, but not they have won 3 of their last 4. Tonight is the final game at home before they hit the road for the rest of the month. I think this Cubs team comes focused to give their home town fans something to cheer about, knowing they'll host the big, bad Phillies when they get back.

This is the best line on the market and I'll take the bait for the Cubs at home once again.
