Twelve years ago, the Texas Rangers were within one strike away from winning the World Series for the first time, before having their dreams cruelly crushed by David Freese and the St. Louis Cardinals.
After returning to the Fall Classic for the first time since that heartbreaking seven-game series loss, Texas has put themselves in position to end their title drought, winning Game 1 at home and taking the last two games over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

Tonight, the Rangers will look to finally scale the summit successfully and remove their name from the list of major professional sports teams without a championship with a World Series Game 5 win at Chase Field.
But will Zac Gallen and the Diamondbacks at least force the Rangers to go back to Arlington to clinch their title at Globe Life Field?
Last night’s contest saw the two teams combine for four homers, 18 runs and 23 hits in an 11-7 Rangers win, but runs may be at a premium tonight with Gallen and Nathan Eovaldi on the bump.

Historical World Series Trends Forecast a Frustrating Night for Rangers
This year’s matchup between the Rangers and Diamondbacks is the 119th edition of the Fall Classic. All but four have been a best-of-seven. The inaugural World Series in 1903 was a best-of-nine, and the format returned from 1919 to 1921.
Out of the 114 World Series that have been a best-of-seven, only 47 (41.2%) have been won in five or fewer games, including none of the last four, just two of the last ten, and nine of the 22 that have taken place in the 21st century.
Recent World Series to End in Five or Fewer Games (2001-Present)
- 2004: Red Sox swept Cardinals
- 2005: White Sox swept Astros
- 2006: Cardinals defeated Tigers in five games
- 2007: Red Sox swept Rockies
- 2008: Phillies defeated Rays in five games
- 2010: Giants defeated Rangers in five games
- 2012: Giants swept Tigers
- 2015: Royals defeated Mets in five games
- 2018: Red Sox defeated Dodgers in five games
The last time that a team had a chance to clinch in Game 5 was 2021. That year, the Atlanta Braves were in position to finish off the Houston Astros at Truist Park, but the Astros were able to send the series back to Minute Maid Park, where the Braves sealed the deal with a 7-0 win in Game 6.
Rangers vs Diamondbacks Prediction and Best Bets for Game 5
Prediction: Diamondbacks to win
Best Bets: Diamondbacks ML (-110 at Bovada) & Rangers/Diamondbacks under 8.5 (-105 at Bovada)
In Game 1, Gallen and Eovaldi weren’t at their sharpest, with Gallen allowing three runs, four hits, and four walks in five innings and Eovaldi allowing five runs, six hits, and a walk in 4.2 innings.
But I think we’ll see better from both pitchers tonight, and I think the Diamondbacks will keep the Rangers and their fans waiting at least another couple of days to celebrate a long-awaited title.
