We've got a day full of baseball and pitcher's duel tonight at Dodger Stadium. Jack Flaherty will make just his 2nd home start for the Dodgers tonight, with Logan Gilbert and the Mariners in town for Game 3 of this 3-game series.
The race for the NL West is going to be one of the most interesting story lines we see unfold, between now and the end of the season.
The Dodgers were off to a hot start and it looked like they'd be running away with the division, but it looks like the Padres and Diamondbacks have other ideas. Mookie Betts is finally healthy and looking to help his team secure the division.
Los Angeles is 12-6 this month and they've won 6 of the 9 games Mookie's played. They've now won back to back games against the Mariners and look to complete the sweep tonight.
The Mariners will have their Ace on the mound tonight, Logan Gilbert. He's got a 2.96 ERA this season and he's looked phenomenal all year. The Mariners look like they're ready for the post-season but it's because of this pitching staff, not the bats.
Seattle leads the league in strikeouts and have had a really hard time scoring runs this year. Tonight they look to prevent the sweep and upset the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
He's one of the most exciting players in baseball and unfortunately he's had to spend a big chunk of the year on the sidelines. Mookie Betts is back with the Dodgers and he's look great since his return.
In 9 games this month, Mookie's batting 0.314 with 11 hits, 2 home runs and 5 RBI. He's got a batting average of 0.305 on the year with 12 home runs and a 0.494 SLG. Logan Gilbert presents a tough test but if anyone's up for it, it's Mookie.
He's yet to face off with Gilbert in his career but he's 0.291 against righties this season and 10 of his 12 home runs have come against right handed pitchers. Mookie's hit just 2 home runs since returning and he's yet to hit 1 at Dodger Stadium.
Bett's has recorded a 0.503 SLG at home this season and despite the matchup, I think tonight could be the day he finally leaves the yard.
Flaherty is the exact kind of move you make at the deadline when you're trying to compete. It seems like every season now that the Dodgers acquire some stud pitcher at the deadline and this year that's Jack Flaherty.
He's been good for the Dodgers, but maybe not great just yet. Flaherty's got a 3.78 ERA in 3 games with the Dodgers and he's given up 7 runs over his L2 starts. Jack's given up 18 hits in his 3 starts but he's also struck out 24.
Flaherty has just 1 start at Dodger Stadium this season and he went 5.2 innings, struck out 10 batters, and gave up 9 hits. A little bit of everything from the young man, and tonight he gets an even better matchup.
The Mariners are striking out at a 25.7% rate and currently lead the league in strikeouts as a team. They're fighting for the post-season but if there's 1 thing the Mariners do a lot of, it's strikeout.
