Among the several notable events taking place on a busy Sunday in sports is the finale of the first Red Sox vs. Yankees series of the new MLB season.

Along with the final round of the Masters, the last day of the NBA regular season, a seven-game slate of NHL action that features several top Stanley Cup contenders, the Sunday MLB slate will wrap up with the Yankees seeking a sweep of the Red Sox.

In the first two games of the series, we have already been treated to games and moments befitting one of the biggest rivalries in sports. Friday's opener saw the Yankees come back after trailing 3-0, 4-3, and 5-4 to walk it off in 12 innings. Yesterday, the Red Sox put early runs on the board again, and again, the Yankees rallied to win and wrap up the series ahead of tonight's primetime tilt.

Houck, Montgomery Seek Positive Starts to New Season

Starting pitching will be key to how far both the Red Sox and Yankees go this season. As it stands, neither team quite stacks up to the Toronto Blue Jays, who top 2022 AL East division odds and are also one of the second favorite to win the 2022 World Series, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Both teams have a potential AL Cy Young Award candidate spearheading their rotation. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole finished second to Robbie Ray in the AL Cy Young voting last season and is a +450 favorite to win the award this season. Boston's Nathan Eovaldi finished fourth in the voting last season and comes in at +2500 to win it this season.

But beyond their aces, both teams have a lot of rotation questions and uncertainty that need to be answered affirmatively to maximize their chances for success in this season's MLB playoffs.

Tonight's starters need to start strong and be consistent in 2022 after showing some positives in 2021.

Houck didn't give up more than three earned runs in any appearance last season, and he had two important successful outings at the back of the end of the season, one to help Boston pick up a key win over the Washington Nationals on the penultimate day of the regular season and another to help the Red Sox win Game 2 of the ALDS against the Rays and even up the series.

Montgomery had a losing record last season, but he also posted the second-lowest ERA of his MLB career. He also matched a career-best average for pitches per inning, averaging 16.3 pitches per inning.

Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction and Best Bets

Prediction: Red Sox to win

Best Bet: OVER 8.5 (-117 at BetUS)

In the first two games, none of the starting pitchers on either side went deep, and none were overly outstanding. Look for that to continue in the finale and for some runs to be put on the board in primetime.

Given the potential for runs and the numbers that are elsewhere, this is really good MLB betting value.
