Astros vs. Padres Analysis & Breakdown
Jackson Merrill rounds the base after blasting 1 into the stands, last night.
The Padres won a low scoring affair to kick off this 3-game series with the Astros. Both team sit firmly in playoff spots, and barring a real disaster, both will be playing baseball in October.
Houston and San Diego combined for 19 hits in last night's contest, but the teams scored just 4 combined runs between the two teams.
The Astros recorded 6 hits, scoring just 1 run in last night's loss, which came on a single by Yordan Alvarez in the 8th inning.
Last night both Tatis Jr. and Alvarez recorded just 1 hit for 1 base and left me holding the bag. Both guys seemed to be in great spots but neither 1 was able to record a hit till late in the game; on their third/fourth at-bats.
Today we're going hunting for some value so let's jump into some of my favorite plays on the diamond tonight.

Hunter Brown has held opponents scoreless in the 1st inning of 20 of his 28 starts.
Yeah, I hate NRFIs too but the hit rates with these two pitchers is too high to ignore. Both Hunter Brown and Michael King have been great for their respective teams this year.
King has a 3.06 ERA this year, he's allowing less than 8 hits per 9 innings and has given up just 17 home runs, across 28 starts (161.2 IP).
Hunter Brown has recorded a 3.59 ERA this year, giving up just 17 home runs across 28 starts as well. Neither guy has been CY Young good, but they've still been really good. Both pitchers have a combined record of 23-17, and a combined NRFI record of 43-13.
Brown's allowed no runs in the 1st inning of 20 of his 28 starts, while King has held opposing teams scoreless in 23 of his 28 1st innings pitched.

Manny Machado celebrates a double.
Manny's on fire right now, and it looks like he's gearing up for what could be a deep post-season run. Machado's hitting 0.302 in the month of September, he's recorded 3 home runs, 16 RBI, and a 0.528 SLG.
Last night, he recorded 2 hits, 3 bases, and 1 RBI. He's hitting 0.280 against righties this year, with 20 of his 26 home runs coming against right handed pitchers (0.472 SLG). Manny's batting 0.285 at home this year, and the dude's batting over 0,300 since the beginning of August.
Hunter Brown's got a 4.09 ERA through two starts this month, giving up 13 hits and 5 earned runs across those two starts. He's struggled this year against right-handed bats and has allowed them to hit 0.278 with a 0.373 SLG.
Manny's ready for the post-season and those are the type of people I like putting my money on, this time of year.
