Making the playoffs is a long shot for both teams, but a win this afternoon will keep those slim postseason hopes alive. The Red Sox currently sit six games back of the final American League wild-card spot while the Yankees aren't much further back at eight games.

Having said that, if the visitors want to reach the playoffs, Aaron Bone's club needs to find a way to end its skid against Boston.

After all, the Yankees are a dismal 1-8 against the Red Sox in 2023. Making matters worse, New York has tasted defeat in each of its last seven encounters with Boston, losing by an average of 4.4 runs per contest.

If that isn't bad enough, the Bronx Bombers are also 0-3 at Fenway Park while getting outscored 25-8 on aggregate this season. Even though the Yankees are 6-1 in their last seven road games, it's clear that playing in Beantown is a whole other challenge.

Meanwhile, the Yankees' Randy Vasquez is set to make his first start since August 16. He's made two relief appearances since then, playing to a 2.08 ERA as he allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out seven batters over 4 1/3 innings.

With the Yankees averaging 7.1 hits over their last seven road games, I expect Pivetta to give up his fair share of hits this afternoon.
