Is it still a rivalry when one team almost always beats the other team? That question is worth asking about the rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. This afternoon, the Dodgers will go for their 12th straight series win against the Padres as the two teams face off in a finale of their four-game series at Petco Park.

The last time the Dodgers (64-46, 30-26 away) lost a series against the Padres (55-57, 30-27 home) was June 2021, when they were swept in a three-game series in San Diego.

After taking the win Friday and yesterday, the Dodgers are on the verge of extending their run.

Pitching Matchup for Dodgers vs Padres

Will the Dodgers Break Out the Bats Against the Padres Again?

One-sided offense has been the name of the game thus far in this series. The Dodgers own 10-5 and 8-2 wins, while the Padres picked up an 8-3 win in Saturday’s game.

Will we see more of the same in the series finale?

In his first nine starts starts this season, Gonsolin was 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA. But in his last eight starts, he is 2-3 with a 6.59 ERA. After allowing four or more runs only once in his first nine starts, he has allowed four or more runs six times in his last eight starts.

On a positive note, he did pitch well in his last outing, though it was against the woeful Oakland A’s. This past Wednesday, he allowed just one run, five hits, and two walks in five innings and picked up the win, his first since July 7.

Lugo has only one win in his last ten starts, but he is on a solid run at the moment. He has allowed fewer than three earned runs only five times in his last six starts, and he has pitched six or more innings in those five starts.

But where the Padres are much better at the plate against lefties, the Dodgers are much better at the plate against righties.

In games started by RHP, the Dodgers are hitting .252 and averaging 5.89 runs per game. But in games started by LHP, they are hitting .245 and averaging 5.18 runs per game.

The Padres, meanwhile, are hitting .261 and averaging exactly five runs per game in games started by LHP, with those numbers dropping to .229 and 4.42 runs per game in games started by RHP.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres Prediction and Best Bets

Dodgers vs Padres Best Bets: Dodgers ML (+100 at Bovada) & Dodgers team total over 4.5 runs (-105 at Bovada)

After scoring only 24 runs in their final six games in July, the Dodgers have scored nearly twice as many (46) in their 5-1 start in August.

Lugo has pitched well as of late, while Gonsolin had not been at his best prior to Wednesday’s start against the worst team in the league.

But more good run support will negate Gonsolin’s need to spin a gem in this spot. The Dodgers have scored five or more runs eight of the nine times that they have won a Gonsolin start this season, and that will improve to nine out of ten to secure a 12th straight series win over the Padres.
