Will Gallen Rebound from Subpar Home Start?

Gallen's last home start actually wasn't bad at all. In fact, it was excellent.

But when you consider that Gallen had recorded double-digit strikeouts, not allowed a single run, and had given up only nine hits and one walk in each of his first three home starts this season, his stat line from Monday's start against the Miami Marlins is a drop-off.

What was that stat line? 7 IP, 5 H, R, BB, 7 K.

I know, I know. Unacceptable, right?

So, he's got some making up to do tonight, armed with a 4-0 record, a 0.33 ERA, 41 strikeouts, and one run, 14 hits, and two walks allowed in 27.1 innings in four home starts in 2023.

That home form is a big reason why Gallen is neck-and-neck with Atlanta's Spencer Strider atop the NL Cy Young odds. Entering today, both Gallen and MLB strikeout leader Strider–who struck out 12 but took his first loss of the season yesterday against the Toronto Blue Jays–are at +230 at BetOnline, well ahead of three-time winner Clayton Kershaw.

Speaking of subpar starts, DeSclafani is coming off an actual subpar start. Against the Washington Nationals on Monday, DeSclafani allowed a season-high five runs and ten hits and took the loss in a home loss for the Giants.

However, all five of those runs and six of the ten hits were allowed in the first inning. Giants manager Gabe Kapler kept DeSclafani in despite the rough start, and he put up six consecutive zeros from that point. Unfortunately, San Francisco's bats managed only one run.

While Gallen has been at his best at home, DeSclafani has been at his best on the road. In three road starts, he is 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA, and he has allowed no walks, three runs, and 12 hits in 20.2 IP. In his most recent road start, he pitched eight shutout innings and allowed only three hits in a gem at Houston eleven days ago.
