It has not been a good start to the week for the Chicago Cubs, who have been blanked in back-to-back games by the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park. Can the Cubbies salvage something from the series in this evening's finale (7:20 pm ET, ESPN+)?

On Monday, Reynaldo Lopez's latest strong start helped the Braves open the series with a 2-0 victory. The frustrations continued last night for the Cubs, who couldn't solve Chris Sale (7 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 9 K) and fell 7-0.

By taking the first two games of this series, the Braves (26-13) remain even in the loss column with the Philadelphia Phillies (30-13), their lone competition in the NL East.

The Cubs, meanwhile, are now a game and a half back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, where, like the NL East, only two teams are at or above the .500 mark.

Chicago Cubs vs Atlanta Braves Betting Analysis

After facing Lopez (2-1, 1.34 ERA) and Sale (6-1, 2.54 ERA), it doesn't get any easier for the Cubs today.

Since a couple of subpar starts last month, Morton has been cooking with gas. Over his last four starts, he is 2-0 with a 1.73 ERA. In 26 innings, he has allowed just five runs, 16 hits, and six walks.

Last time out, Morton allowed only one run, three hits, and one walk and struck out seven in seven innings against the New York Mets last Friday.

That doesn't bode well for the Cubs, especially when they are hitting just .225 against right-handed pitchers and .231 in games started by righties, while averaging only 4.37 runs per game in games started by RHP.

They do however counter quite well with Assad, who is off to a stellar start this season.

Assad has yet to allow more than five hits or two runs in a start, and in 42.1 innings, he has allowed just nine runs (eight earned). And while he hasn't been as stingy on the road as he has been at home (0.81 ERA), a 2.70 ERA in four road starts is nothing to complain about.

Assad should keep the Cubs, who are 13-5 in games following a loss this season, in this one. However, expect a similar result as the first two games.

Chicago may well avoid being shut out for the third straight game, but they will come away from Atlanta empty-handed. The Braves, at 15-4, have MLB's best home record, and they will improve upon it by securing the sweep in a low-scoring contest.
