Astros vs Rangers Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/7)
After the Rangers opened the series with a win, the Astros got some revenge with a 4-2 victory on Tuesday. Yordan Alvarez drove in Alec Bregman with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Houston the lead it needed before Josh Hader came in for his 23rd save of the season.
As a result of yesterday’s finish, the Astros are just 0.5 games back of the Seattle Mariners for the AL West lead while the Rangers are now five games away from the top of the division.
The victory was also much-needed for a Houston team that entered the contest on a three-game losing streak. Winning since the All-Star Break ended has been tough for both sides, proven by the Astros being just 7-9 SU since the regular season resumed while the Rangers are 8-9 SU during that stretch.
Having said that, the Astros did exceed expectations given that they’re 4-6 SU in their last 10 road games. Conversely, the Rangers have a decent shot at bouncing back given that they’ve won 11 of their last 15 home games while only losing back-to-back outings once during that stretch.
The Rangers are 11-4 SU in their last 15 home games at Globe Life Field.
Unfortunately, for the Rangers, Globe Life Field has become somewhat of a second home for the Astros. Houston is a dominant 11-3 SU across its last 14 trips to Arlington, having outscored its AL West rival 103-65 on aggregate.
If the Astros want to continue that dominance, they need a strong showing from LHP Yusei Kikuchi, who’s been shaky lately. The former MLB All-Star hurler hasn’t notched a victory since June 11, going 0-4 with a 7.16 ERA while allowing a .287/.345/.503 slash line in the nine subsequent starts.
Additionally, Kikuchi has allowed a 6.43 ERA across seven innings in two career appearances at Globe Life Field.
Meanwhile, it’ll be interesting to see which version of Rangers RHP Jose Urena appears on the mound. While the 32-year-old has appeared in 26 games this season, only seven of those instances were starts. That’s without mentioning how his ERA as a starter (4.29) is noticeably worse than when he’s a reliever (3.22).
After Urena allowed seven earned runs on eight hits across four innings in his last start, I’m taking the Astros on the road. They’re riding high from yesterday’s win and even though they haven’t had a ton of recent road success, their history at Globe Life Field speaks for itself.
With that in mind, I’m going to keep things simple by sticking with the Astros on the moneyline.

Best Astros vs Rangers MLB Player Prop (8/7)
After taking a look through BetOnline’s Astros vs. Rangers player props, I recommend taking Yordan Alvarez o1.5 total bases (+102).
Although it’s a small sample size, Alvarez has been consistent with this prop lately. He’s finished with the Over in three of his last four games, batting .400 while tallying one home run and a double on six hits across 15 at-bats. The Over is also a whopping 10-3 in his last 13 road games against the Rangers — a span where he’s slashing .365/.460/.692 with 19 hits, five HRs, and a pair of doubles.
Considering how he also averaged 2.8 total bases in those matchups, I see good things happening to Alvarez tonight.
