Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal might have saved his job last season - ACC Football Preview

ncaaf

Heading into this season of College Football the ACC is the clear 3rd best conference in the sport. The SEC and BIG 10 are still the standard right now and then comes the ACC. The Canes made it all the way to the national championship game last year and hope to finish the job this year.

Clemson looks to return to it's mid 2010's form and teams like Virginia Tech and Florida State hope to return to the national spotlight. Then you have teams like Louisville, SMU, and Pittsburgh who have their sights set on making the playoff this year.

ACC Win Total #1: Miami Under 10.5 Wins (-115) – BetOnline

Malachi Toney is a major offensive weapon for the Hurricanes - Indiana Miami Picks

Malachi Toney is a major offensive weapon for the Hurricanes

Miami is undoubtably the team to beat in the ACC.  They are -140 to win the conference while the next closest teams are +750. The Canes are going to be led by one of the best offenses in the country this season. Darian Mensah comes over from Duke in the transfer portal to replace Carson Beck as the new QB. Mark Fletcher returns at RB and Malachi Toney enters his sophomore season as one of the best WR's in college football. Combine that trio with OC Shannon Dawson and you have one of the most electrifying offenses in the sport.

Defensively they do have to replace those top two edge rushers on the defensive line and four of their starters on the offensive line from last season. If you would want any coach in the country to replace those positions groups though, it's Miami's coach Mario Cristobal. His teams going back to his days at Oregon are always great on the line of scrimmage and I would expect more of the same this year.

That's the good with Miami and the reason so many people love them this year and why they are big favorites to win the ACC. Here is the reason I'm taking the under 10.5 wins though – the schedule.

Miami needs only two losses for them to go under this number. They play at Notre Dame and at Clemson this season. They could win both of those games, they could also lose both of those games. There is a good chance they probably split those road trips to South Bend and Clemson. The reason I'm taking the under is because Cristobal teams time and time again lose games in the regular season they shouldn't. We see it every year.

Last season they lost as a 10-point favorite to SMU and a 13-point favorite to Louisville. The year before that they lost as a 9-point favorite to Georgia Tech and an 11-point favorite to Syracuse. In 2023, they lost as a 20-point favorite to Georgia Tech and so on. Every year, Miami is good for one of these kinds of losses. If I think the Canes lose one game as a big favorite and then lose one of the games at Notre Dame and Clemson then I have to bet under 10.5 wins (-115).

ACC Win Total #2: California Over 6.5 Wins (+115) – BetOnline

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw for over 3,450 yards as a true freshman last year - ACC Football Preview

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw for over 3,450 yards as a true freshman last year

If you watched California football last year then you heard the name Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele ( JKS). The Cal sophomore stood out as a true freshman last year in Berkeley and expectations are sky high for him coming into the year.

Cal has a new coach coming into the season, Tosh Lupoi who comes over from Oregon. Lupoi was the Oregon defensive coordinator for the last 4 years. I like this hire a lot for the Golden Bears and the fact Lupoi was able to keep JKS from transferring was a huge win.

Last year Cal went 7-6 and I think we could see seven or even eight wins from this team this season. Anytime you have a good QB in college football you always have a chance. If you combine a good QB with good coaching then you really got something.

Another reason to like Cal is how the schedule set ups for them in terms of travel. Playing in Northern California when the majority of your conference is on the east coast is not ideal for these college students, but this year the travel won't be terrible and that could benefit them late in the season.

Cal has a road trip across the country to Syracuse in Week 2 before coming back home for two home games. Then, they play at UNLV in Las Vegas which isn't a bad flight and come right back to Berkeley for two more home games. Heading into Week 8, I think is where their schedule becomes favorable. They play at SMU and at NC State back-to-back. Then they have a bye and then they're at Virginia. 4 straight weeks of being on the road, but I think that's a lot better then going back and forth across the country. After that they finish up the season at home the last two weeks.

Cal doesn't have the talent that a lot of the other schools in the conference do and a lot can happen when you're bringing in a first year head coach. Tosh Lupoi was one of the top first year coaches in this cycle though and he's got a heck of a QB in JKS. Combine that with how difficult in can be for ACC teams to win in Berkeley and how the schedule sets up for Cal from a travel standpoint I think the Golden Bears can get back to 7 or even 8 wins this season.

ACC Win Total #3: Georgia Tech Over 6.5 Wins (+115) – BetOnline

Can Brent Key rally his team and get them fired up for this rivalry game? Georgia Georgia Tech Picks

Can Brent Key replace Haynes King and get Georgia Tech back to a bowl game?

Another 6.5 win total in the ACC that we are going over. I'm taking the Yellow Jackets to win 7+ games for the 4th straight season. The challenge for Brent Key this season is to replace all those core group of guys he had last year. They only return 3 offensive starters and 5 defensive starters from their team last season. The biggest loss is QB, Haynes King who was the leader and helped turn Bren't Key's program in the right direction. This is one of those years we find out how good of a coach Brent Key is and if he can continue to win when their is massive turnover on his roster.

To replace Haynes King he went out and got Alberto Mendoza, Fernando's brother. He also got stud running back Justice Haynes from Michigan. Georgia Tech does have a new offensive coordinator this season in George Godsey but he definitely will have some talent to work with. They also bring in a new defensive coordinator. Even though they lost a lot of starters from last year they do bring in a bunch of transfers, especially on the defensive line who should make an impact.

Yellow Jackets schedule is tough. At Virginia Tech, at Pitt, at Clemson, and at Georgia. Also have to play Tennessee and Louisville at home. However, Brent Key is terrific as an underdog. 6-1 ATS as a home dog and 9-4 ATS as a road dog. He's the kind of coach that gets the most out of his team and for that reason, even with the tough schedule and the amount of players they lost last year, I'm taking Georgia Tech Over 6.5 wins (+115).
