2026-27 SEC Football Preview: Will the Powerhouse of College Football Live Up to the Name?

The SEC has not produced a National Champion in the past three NCAA Football seasons. Let's take a look at this conference and see if things might change this year. This league sent five teams to the College Football Playoff last year, but just one made it to the National Semifinals, as the Ole Miss Rebels lost to the Miami Hurricanes. Despite there being a clear top two teams in this league, the next five or so are definitely worthy of making the CFP. How many teams will the SEC send this year? Will Alabama or Georgia Find the SEC Championship Yet Again?
Would you look at that? Over the past decade, and even the past 12 years, the SEC Champion has been either Alabama or Georgia, with just one outlier in 2019 as the Joe Burrow-led LSU Tigers took the South. In fact, the last time we had an SEC Championship game without the Tide or Dawgs was back in 2013, when Auburn beat Missouri.
Even in the extended SEC with Texas joining the mix, the Bulldogs took down the Longhorns in OT led by then, backup QB, Gunner Stockton, who stepped in for an injured Carson Beck. Georgia has won two straight SEC Championships, and have played in the last five. Looking at the betting odds to win the league, the books think they are headed right back to Atlanta.

As you can see, there is a VERY clear top two, in Texas and Georgia. There is also a clear bottom three, in Kentucky, Arkansas and Mississippi State. However, the middle of this league is totally up for grabs, and it will be incredibly entertaining to watch things play out.
SEC Football Preview: Team Tiers

Tier 1 – The Horns and the Dawgs
There's Texas, there's Georgia, and then there's everybody else in the conference where "it means more". Steve Sarkisian and Arch Manning run things back after narrowly missing out on the College Football Playoff in his first year as a starter. But with a daunting SEC schedule and high expectations, I'm worried the lights might be too bright, which is why I bet on Texas Under 9.5 Wins this season, laying the juice at -135.
As for the Dawgs, they would be my pick to win the SEC. They have to go to Alabama and Ole Miss, arguably their two toughest games on the schedule, but they avoid Texas, Texas A&M, and LSU all together. The defense alone will be enough to keep the Bulldogs in some of these games, but I do have faith in Gunner Stockton, who can make some plays with his legs if his young receiving corps doesn't hold up.
Tier 2 – Could Compete for the League Title
Although the top two are set in stone, at least prior to the season, the second tier of teams in the SEC could be frisky, and any of them could compete for a spot in the Championship Game. I'm talking LSU, Texas A&M, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma. Now, right off the bet, throw LSU and Texas A&M out the window. I do not have faith in Lane Kiffin in year one, despite the team he has assembled. Although they get most of their toughest conference games at home, they take on Clemson in their opener, and have some sneaky tough road spots, including Lane's return to Oxford.
As for A&M, their defense will be solid, but I expect the offense to take a huge step back. They lost their OC, Collin Klein, who took the head coaching job at his alma mater, Kansas State. Without him, I do not think Marcel Reed has as much success, and they have road games at LSU, at Alabama and at Oklahoma. Good luck Aggies.
Alabama will go as far as freshman QB Kaelon Russell can take them. Ole Miss is returning with a vengeance after losing their coach amidst a championship run. And a Brent Venables defense with a healthy John Mateer could certainly surprise some people.

Tier 3 – The Best of the Bottom Half
I will have my eyes on the Florida Gators has Jon Sumrall looks to lead the Swamp back the greatness. Auburn will also be an exciting watch as Alex Golesh brings Byrum Brown from South Florida to take charge of the Tigers. And despite myself being a Jayhawk fan, I do have some faith in the Missouri Tigers with new QB Austin Simmons. Ahmad Hardy returns and is tracking well off his injury, and new receiver Cayden Lee comes from Ole Miss with Simmons, giving them some chemistry already on offense. Vanderbilt is my last team here, as freshman Jared Curtis fills in for life after Pavia in Nashville. We'll see how good he is, but thankfully he has a defense returning plenty from last year's unit.
These teams won't compete for the league title, but they should be entertaining, maybe good for an upset or two, and will likely get pummeled by a smaller school in a meaningless bowl game when everyone opts out.
Tennessee is the odd man out, as I'd place them in the lower portion of Tier 3, but definitely ahead of the bottom three.
Tier 4 – Bleh
South Carolina does not interest me at all. After being everyone's "Dark Horse" last year they really didn't do much. I don't see them improving by a significant margin. Life looks better in Arkansas with Ryan Silverfield coming over from Memphis. The Hogs defense was bottom five in the country last year, so anything is an improvement. However a tough schedule could cause me to fade Arkansas on their win total for a second straight season.
Kenny Minchey will help try to make Kentucky football relevant again, and lastly the Bulldogs of Mississippi State are looking for more than one SEC win for the first time since 2022. I don't think they get it.
