Let's roll over our winnings as we stay out in California tonight for an inter league matchup between the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Two studs take the bump for their teams, looking to get a win. The Mariners need to stop the bleeding and are looking to avoid the sweep, while the Padres are trying to win an eighth straight game. These two teams will meet again in Seattle in mid-May for a second series against each other, and the Mariners might be looking for redemption when the time comes. They've lost two straight to San Diego in this series so far, and the Padres are trying to finish off the sweep tonight at home. However, the hosts are actually slight underdogs tonight on the betting board.
The Padres are 12-6 on the year and 8-4 at Petco Park, beating Seattle 4-1 and then 7-6 the past two evenings. Seattle is just 8-11 overall and are just 1-7 away from home, yet somehow they are favored tonight. Does that make sense? Or are the books gifting us the Padres with a plus sign next to them? Both pitchers have gotten blown up this season. Luis Castillo pitched six shutout innings in his opening start, but since has allowed 11 runs, 10 of them earned, in his last two outings, combining for just seven total innings. Against Houston last Saturday, he gave up seven runs on 10 hits and a walk, including a home run. Walker Buehler has trended in the other direction.
He allowed three and four earned runs in his first 6.2 innings this year in his opening two starts, but is coming off a great outing last Friday. Pitching against the Rockies, Buehler allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings, sitting down four batters as well. Can he keep it up at home against the Mariners?

Mariners vs. Padres Prediction: Padres Win Outright, Over 8.5

I think we see some runs in this game, but I trust Buehler on the bump a little more than Castillo, especially based off recent performances. He does a great job of mixing up his stuff, throwing six different pitches, but none more than 25% of the time. Therefore he keeps the hitters guessing. Over the past week, the Padres are fifth in the MLB in team batting average, while the Mariners are in the lower half of the league. San Diego is also the best team at avoiding strikeouts over the past week, doing so just 14.5% of the time.
Over the course of the season, the Padres are scoring 4.72 runs per outing, while the Mariners are putting up an even four. With Castillo recently getting shelled, I think the San Diego bats could turn into Slam Diego tonight, producing plenty of runs while Buehler keeps the M's off of the scoreboard as best he can. Ultimately, I do see value in the Padres at plus money tonight, and I'll take the bait.
