Pitching Matchup for Phillies vs Reds

  • Philadelphia Phillies: LHP Bailey Falter (0-1, 2.61 ERA)
  • Cincinnati Reds: LHP Nick Lodolo (1-0, 1.50 ERA)

Will Lodolo's Bright Start Continue Against the Phillies?

As a team, the Reds aren't off to a great start, winning just four of their first 11 games. They enter this series after being swept in a three-game series against the Braves in Atlanta, with all three losses coming by a run.

But while things aren't necessarily going well for the team as a whole, Lodolo has been excellent so far.

In his season debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the 25-year-old lefty struck out nine and gave up two runs, seven hits, and two walks in five innings in picking up the win.

Then, this past Saturday, Lodolo pitched seven shutout innings against the Phillies, allowing three hits and two walks and striking out 12. When he exited, the Reds had a 1-0 lead and he was in line for the win, but he ended up with a no-decision as Philadelphia rallied for a walk-off win.

Will he turn around and pitch a second straight gem against the Phillies? The reigning NL champs are hitting a respectable .274 in four games in which they faced a left-handed starting pitcher, but they have scored just nine runs in those four games.

Phillies vs Reds Prediction and Best Bets

Prediction for Phillies vs Reds: Reds to win

Best Bets for Phillies vs Reds: Reds first five innings -0.5 (Best Value: BetMGM)

Three of those nine runs came in the bottom of the ninth last Saturday, giving the Phillies a 3-2 win and depriving Lodolo of a second straight win to open the new season.

The latter third of games is where things have unraveled for the Reds several times already, as they have given up decisive runs in the seventh inning or later in all seven of their losses.

That doesn't inspire a lot of confidence when it comes to backing the Reds to take the win, but there's a lot of value in taking the home team to have the lead after five innings, based on how Lodolo is pitching and how several games have gone up to and past that point.
