Kyle Stowers and the Marlins are in a bit of a slump, losing four of their last five games
This is the only series between these ball clubs this season, and both are fighting in their divisions.
The Guardians are 6.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. The Guardians are 15-7 since the All Star Break, including winning five of their last six. Cleveland is 29-27 at home this season, and certainly need a win to keep up in the division.
The Marlins are in third in the NL East, but are a full 12 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies, and six behind the New York Mets. They started out 11-4 coming out of the All Star Break, but since then are just 2-6. They lost four our of five against the Braves in Atlanta, and are just 29-30 on the road this year.
Can they figure out a way to win tonight against the Guardians?
Matchup Information – Marlins vs. Guardians – August 12
Venue & Location: Progressive Field (Cleveland, OH)
One team is trending up, the other down. One is at home, the other has dropped three straight on the road. This isn't rocket science, I won't pretend it is. But let me sell you on why I'm taking the Guardians tonight.
Let's start with the pitchers. Janson Junk has had a rock solid season, and his splits improve on the road. The Marlins have won five of his last six starts, with him getting four of those wins. However, in his last four, he's allowed at least three earned runs, totaling 16 in his last 20 innings pitched. He's allowed home runs in two straight outings as well, and I don't expect as much run support tonight.
The Marlins scored just once in two of their last three games on the road, and significantly struggle when facing left handed pitchers. Against LHP, the Marlins' team batting average drops all the way from .251 to .228.
The Guardians are having their best hitting month as a team, hitting .236 during the month of August, plus their average improves at home as well.
Give me the home favorites tonight, as Logan Allen has given up just three earned runs in his last two starts.
