After losing eight of their previous ten games, the San Diego Padres picked up a welcome win last night over the Baltimore Orioles.

This evening, the Padres (57-63, 31-29 home) will look for a welcome series win, with NL Cy Young Award candidate Blake Snell set to take the mound against the AL East-leading Orioles (74-46, 38-23 away).

Yesterday, the Padres put together a rare complete performance at the plate and on the mound in a 10-3 win over the Orioles.

At the plate, they tallied 13 hits, nine of which were extra-base hits. The biggest of the bunch was a first-inning grand slam by Gary Sanchez, which gave the Friars a 5-0 lead and set them on their way for a much-needed win.

On the mound, Michael Wacha pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and one walk to improve to 9-2 for the season.

Not being able to more consistently produce such performances is why the Padres are 5.5 games behind the Miami Marlins (63-58) for the last NL wild-card spot.

But today’s rubber game brings the opportunity to do so, with their best pitcher taking the hill.

In his two starts this month, Snell has given up as many runs as he did in the 12 previous starts entering August.

But he is still 8-2 with a 1.16 ERA in his last 15 starts, allowing just 11 earned runs in 85 innings. Over the course of those 15 starts, he has allowed more than one run only three times and has had seven scoreless outings.

The Orioles have MLB’s second-best win percentage in games following a loss this season (29-16, .644) and are 25-19 (.568) as a road underdog, so this isn’t a bad spot for them to be in at all.

Kremer isn’t a Cy Young candidate like Snell, but he has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last seven starts, all of which Baltimore has won. Also, he has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last seven road starts, a stretch in which the Orioles are 6-1.

Baltimore Orioles vs San Diego Padres Prediction and Expert Picks

Orioles vs Padres Picks: Padres -1.5 (+113 at MyBookie) & Padres team total over 4.5 (-106 at MyBookie)

The Padres are just 25-31 (.446) in games following a win and just 27-25 (.519) as a home favorite, but they are worth backing here.

After winning just once in Snell’s first five home starts, the Padres have won each of his last seven starts at Petco Park. All seven of those wins and 11 of their wins in his 2023 starts have come by multiple runs, so the run line is a solid choice in this spot.

Also, the Padres have scored five or more runs in nine of the 11 Snell starts that they have won, including five times in his last seven home starts and in four straight Snell starts overall.
