Rivalry weekend heads to the Rocky Mountains as the Arizona Diamondbacks take on the Colorado Rockies in Denver this weekend. This is the first meeting of the season between the two NL West teams, but don't worry. They will see each other plenty before the end of the MLB season. Currently, the Rockies are nine games out of first place in the division, sitting at the bottom, while the Snakes are just five games back in third place. Both teams are coming off a loss in their last game. For the Diamondbacks, that was two nights ago in Arlington against the Texas Rangers, giving them a second straight loss. The Rockies were defeated by the Pittsburgh Pirates last night at PNC Park. Statistically speaking, the Rockies have been better at the plate than the Snakes, as they hit .248 as a team while the Diamondbacks hit just .234. But things could change based on the starting pitchers tonight.
Both Merrill Kelly and Kyle Freeland have not been great this season. They have had some struggles, as you can tell below with their combined ERA of 13.62 and an average WHIP of 1.70. Will we see plenty of runs tonight at Coors Field like the total suggests?

Diamondbacks vs. Rockies Prediction: Diamondbacks Win and Cover, Over 11.5

I might sound like a broken record here, but I will be targeting the Diamondbacks against a left handed pitcher. The Snakes hit just .234 as a team, dropping to .230 on the road. However, against left handed pitching, they hit .259 as a team, ranking top six in the entire MLB. Despite losing two in a row, they have scored nine total runs in those games, so the bats are clearly doing their thing.
I also endorse the Snakes Team Total over, but at 6.5 for plus money, I'll just back them to win at playable juice.
In his last home start, Kyle Freeland allowed six earned runs on just eight hits and three walks to the Atlanta Braves in 4.1 innings. He's been terrible over his last three starts, allowing 16 total earned runs in just 14.1 innings. That won't help your team win. Plus, as I eluded to above, the Diamondbacks' bats have been hot.
I see them having plenty of offensive success against Freeland, then we just need Merrill Kelly to hold his end of the bargain. He's had some rough starts, no doubt about it. But something tells me he sees some progression tonight as he faces the last place team in the division. Go Snakes.
