The United States kicks off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign at home this evening, as they host Paraguay in SoFi Stadium out in Los Angeles. This begins play for Group D, with Australia and Turkey going head to head tomorrow, along with both Group C teams, and Switzerland and Qatar from Group B. After today, all of our hosts will have a match under their belt as Canada takes on Bosnia & Herzegovina this afternoon. But tonight in LA, can the hosts start out with a win at plus money? Paraguay will be missing attacker Julio Enciso for this World Cup. He was injured in a friendly last week.
You can read all about my thoughts on the USMNT roster here, but ultimately I do not have much faith in this team. On paper, we should win the group no problem. But I see us struggling in all of our group stage matches. Yes, with an extended field, getting out of the group should be much easier. However I don't see us progressing further than the Round of 32.
But do we stand a chance in this match tonight? The odds have shifted so that the United States is listed at plus money, taking a little value away from the other side. I am not willing to completely fade our team in this spot, however, a win tonight will not be easy, and I've turned to a different market to bet on in this match.

Even without Julio Enciso, who got injured during a Paraguayan friendly, they can compete with us. They met in November of 2025 in an international friendly, where the USA was able to beat Paraguay 2-1 at Subaru Park, but both teams found the back of the net just 10 minutes into the match. Despite it seeming like the United States will play very defensive based on the roster they brought, Paraguay will press, be aggressive, and dare the US to keep up with them.
Ultimately, I think this is going to be a dog fight, and I like this bet at plus money more than the over 2.5 for slightly more juice. This match has all the makings of being a 1-1 draw, and unfortunately for American fans, I believe that's the result we will get. Pochettino should know his team can't afford to give points away to anyone in this group, but with the way I see Paraguay attacking and trying to control the ball, we might not have as many chances as we think.
