This past week, the United States Men's National Team revealed their 26 man roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup beginning in the next couple of weeks. As the host nation, there is plenty of pressure on this squad to perform well, especially with many deeming this the most talented USMNT roster of all time. However, there are a few players who I felt should not be included, while there are a couple others I believe got snubbed. Let's dig into this roster and see which player (or players) have the most to prove during the 2026 World Cup campaign.
USMNT 2026 World Cup Roster Reveal

These are the 26 players representing the United States at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Starting with the goalkeepers, I don't have too many thoughts. Matt Freese will likely be the number one choice, as he started every match of the 2025 Gold Cup under Mauricio Pochettino, where the United States lost to Mexico in the final match. Attacking wise, I believe the right choices were made.
The three who will likely start up top for the United States are Folarin Balogun, of course Christian "Captain America" Pulisic, and likely Tim Weah or Haji Wright. Ricardo Pepi is a great reserve to have, and I could even see Brenden Aaronson seeing the pitch and contributing to the offense. Alejandro Zendejas is an interesting selection in my eyes, but between him and Josh Sargeant, I understand why Pochettino went with the Liga MX player.
As far as defenders go, clearly Pochettino took plenty of personnel. Tim Ream is aging out of soccer in general, let alone international play, and I think he may be a bit too far past his prime to provide in the back line. Chris Richards, Jedi Robinson, Sergińo Dest and Alex Freeman were all locks on this squad, and Joe Scally could be included in that group as well.
Pressure will be on Max Arfsten, Mark McKenzie, and Miles Robinson to prove they belong, but I'm not sure they will see the pitch that often. Lastly, Auston Trusty will look to show the haters he deserves to be included in this 26 man roster.
The midfield is where things get really controversial.
Did Pochettino Choose the Right Midfielders?

Diego Luna was not included in the 2026 World Cup roster despite scoring three goals in the 2025 Gold Cup
Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Malik Tillman are all no brainers in my eyes. Not problems there. I would even loop in Sebastian Berhalter with that group. The son of former USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter is a free kick specialist and provides depth in both the attacking and defensive midfield. I believe he deserves to be on the squad. Lots of pressure will be on Tyler Adams to not only stay healthy, but probably play 90 minutes in every single match.
That leaves Gio Reyna and and Christian Roldan, two players whom I think we could've done without. Obviously Reyna's ceiling is high, but he simply has not produced at the level we need him too. Plus we have plenty of other options at midfield. In my eyes, the biggest snub was leaving off Real Salt Lake midfielder, Diego Luna.
Luna appeared in 17 USMNT caps under Pochettino since his hiring and became a fan favorite during their Gold Cup run in 2025, scoring three goals during the tournament and showing plenty of tenacity on the pitch. Ironically enough, he was heavily used in the USMNT PR campaign for the 2026 World Cup before being left off the 26 man roster.

As far as any best bets regarding the USMNT in this year's World Cup, I would put my money on Stage of Elimination: Last 32 for +170. With the extended field, we should easily be one of the top third place teams in the group (if we don't win it), and move on to the Round of 32. However, things could get ugly in the knockout rounds.
