As mentioned above, both the Padres and Giants need tonight's victory to keep their playoff dreams alive. The NL West rivals own matching 77-79 records, putting them five games back of the final wild-card spot with six outings remaining on their respective schedules.

The 2023 Padres vs. Giants series has leaned in San Diego's favor so far. The Padres emerged victorious in six of the previous 10 matchups this season, which includes winning the last three in a row 17-4 on aggregate.

It's going to be tough for the Giants to buck that trend with the way things have been going lately. San Francisco is just 2-8 straight up in its last 10 games, having scored two or fewer runs in four of the last five.

Meanwhile, the Padres have won nine of their 10 previous outings. In fact, Bob Melvin's club held those opponents to an average of 2.7 runs while outscoring them by a plus-3.6 average run margin.

Nevertheless, it's shaping up to be a pitching duel as Blake Snell and Logan Webb start for the Padres and Giants, respectively.

Snell is currently playing some of his best baseball of the 2023 campaign. The veteran lefty is 4-0 with a 0.56 ERA in his last five starts. That includes when he struck out eight batters without allowing a hit or run over six innings in a 6-1 win over the Giants on Sept. 2.

It's also a juicy matchup for Snell considering that the Giants are 4-8 SU against left-handed pitchers on NL West teams in 2023.

While Webb has a solid 3.68 ERA in his last seven outings, he's only 1-3 over that stretch. A big part of that has to do with San Francisco giving him little run support, averaging only 2.7 runs per outing during that span.

Padres vs Giants Prediction (Sept. 25)

With the Giants struggling to put runs on the board, I'm taking the Padres to win. Snell has been ice-cold on the mound lately and I can't see San Francisco getting much off him, especially after he shut the Giants down earlier this month.

Unless the Giants somehow rediscovered their mojo overnight, this game is the Padres' to lose.

Prediction: SD 5, SF 2

If you're looking for a solid Padres vs. Giants player prop, I like the Over on Blake Snell's 7.5-strikeout total.

Snell has been a strikeout machine lately, racking up eight or more Ks in each of his last six starts. He has a great chance of continuing that trend with the Giants averaging 11.2 strikeouts in their last nine games, including a total of 32 in the last three games alone.

After fanning eight San Francisco batters less than a month ago, expect more of the same from Snell tonight.
