After meeting in San Diego last weekend, one of MLB's top rivalries move to Los Angeles this weekend, as the Padres and Dodgers resume hostilities starting tonight at Dodger Stadium (10:10 pm ET, MLB Network).

At Petco Park last weekend, the Dodgers (23-15) dropped the opener then won the next two games and the series. After repeating that feat at Milwaukee in a series win over the Brewers, the NL West leaders are now back at home to take on the Padres (19-19), who are coming off of a series loss at Minnesota.

Who will take the win in tonight's series opener? Read on for our prediction and best bets for the latest chapter of the Padres vs Dodgers rivalry.

Pitching Matchup for Padres vs Dodgers

  • San Diego Padres: LHP Blake Snell (1-5, 4.89 ERA)
  • Los Angeles Dodgers: RHP Dustin May (4-1, 2.68 ERA)

Will Snell's Efforts Continue to Go Unrewarded?

If you were to just look on the surface at Snell's numbers for the season, it would be easy to assume that he hasn't been pitching well.

That has been true in a few of his starts, but the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner has had some solid starts go for naught.

One of those starts was last Saturday against the Dodgers. He gave just one hit in six innings, a two-run homer by Chris Taylor in the top of the fourth.

That accounted for all of the Dodgers' runs in the game, but unfortunately for Snell, that was all they needed to see off the Padres. May pitched six shutout innings, and San Diego managed a solitary run in the bottom of the ninth.

That was the latest instance of insufficient run support for Snell.

In his lone win, the Padres pushed across eight runs against the Cincinnati Reds eleven days ago. In his other six starts, they have scored 12 runs, six of those coming in a 7-6 loss at Atlanta on April 6. Snell received a no-decision in that game; in the five games in which he has been credited with the loss, San Diego has scored no more than two runs.

The outlook certainly isn't promising for tonight, as they are facing a pitcher who shut them down last weekend and has allowed just three runs and ten hits in 24.1 innings (in four starts) against NL West opposition this season.

Also, in their current 10-2 run, the Dodgers have allowed three or fewer runs eight times. When they have allowed three or fewer runs this season, they have a 17-3 record and have won 11 straight. On the other side, the Padres are a woeful 2-17 when they have scored three or fewer runs this season, with eight consecutive losses.

San Diego Padres vs Los Angeles Dodgers Prediction and Best Bets

Prediction for Padres vs Dodgers: Dodgers to win

Best Bets for Padres vs Dodgers: Dodgers ML (Best Value: BetMGM) & Dodgers team total over 4.5 runs (Best Value: BetOnline)

All signs point favorably to a Dodgers win here, and they also point favorably to the Dodgers hitting the over on their team total. They have scored five or more runs 23 times this season, with 20 of those times coming in wins.

Also, this more or less goes without saying if you have been here for a while, but it is especially worthwhile tonight with where the odds are. If you are going with these recommendations and backing the Dodgers to win, also making a play on them to cover the run line is worth heavy consideration because they have just four one-run wins to this point this season.
