The Toronto Blue Jays improved their wild-card odds with Tuesday's victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The AL East rivals collide for the second game of their three-game series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. ET, leaving time to tell if Toronto can further improve its wild-card chances with another victory.
The Blue Jays' 6-3 win over the Orioles last night was filled with theatrics. After the game was tied 3-3 following nine close-fought innings, Toronto designated hitter Brandon Belt hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the 10th before Jordan Romano struck out two batters in the bottom of the inning for his 31st save of the year.

With September right around the corner, a victory tonight is crucial for both clubs.
Heading into tonight's action, the Orioles only sit two games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays for the AL East lead. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays trail the Seattle Mariners by a single game for the final wild-card position in the American League.
It'll be interesting to see if the O's can prove that last night's defeat was a fluke. After all, Baltimore has dominated the recent Blue Jays vs Orioles matchups, having won eight of the previous 11 meetings this year.
At the same time, the Orioles are just 4-7 in their last 11 home games against the Blue Jays, who are 11-4 in their previous 15 road games overall.
It doesn't help that Brandon Hyde's team is just 3-4 in its last seven matchups against MLB teams with a record above .500.

Nevertheless, it's still going to take a lot from the 27-year-old to out-duel Kevin Gausman.
The AL Cy Young candidate (+375, No. 3 on Bovada) has been electric away from home, going 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA and 49 strikeouts over 42 1/3 innings in his last seven road starts. He also owns a 3.32 ERA in his last three encounters with the Orioles.
Considering how Baltimore's batters struck out 14 times last night, Gausman could be in line for another strong showing.

With momentum firmly on their side, I'm backing the Blue Jays to win at Camden Yards. I see them building off last night's victory — especially with Gausman taking the mound today. The Orioles will make things competitive, but Flaherty's recent play makes them difficult to trust.
Player props are unavailable across all sportsbooks, so I'm also taking the over on the 8-run total. After combining for nine runs last night, the over is now 14-6 in the last 20 Blue Jays vs Orioles matchups in Baltimore, averaging 11.4 total runs in those encounters.
On top of that, Flaherty's last four starts saw an average of 12 total runs scored while Gausman's previous five averaged 8.6. In other words, chances are we'll see a fair amount of offense tonight.
