After a hard-fought, exciting series split against the Houston Astros, the New York Yankees start a new week by welcoming another AL West team to town in the Oakland Athletics.
After being no-hit for the first time since 2003 on Saturday, the Bronx Bombers were on five outs away from getting no-hit on consecutive days, as they were held hitless for 7.1 innings on Sunday.
But just as they rallied to win last Thursday's series opener with Aaron Judge walking it off with a winning hit, the AL East leaders rallied to win the series finale with Judge delivering an even bigger blow than to walk it off.
Blackburn Puts Impressive Road Record on the Line at Yankee Stadium
While this has been a pretty terrible season so far for Oakland, they have been much better on the road than they have been at home. They have won only 8 of 36 home games, while they are 17-21 on the road.
Seven of those 17 wins have come in the eight games that Blackburn has started on the road, while the A's are just 2-4 in his home starts. The 28-year-old righty's home and away splits are rather telling.
Can he continue this success at Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees are an MLB-best 31-9 this season?
Well, the Athletics have won when he has started on the road against the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays, and he also owns a road win over the San Francisco Giants.
Blackburn has yet to give up more than two runs in any road start, and he has done that just twice, while he has done it four times in six home starts.
Getting some decent run support for the most part helps too. The A's have scored four or more runs in five of his away starts, and they have won all five of those games.
And when they have scored at least three runs in a Blackburn start, they are 7-1, while they are 2-4 in the starts in which they scored fewer than three runs.
Oakland Athletics vs. New York Yankees Prediction and Best Bets
Montgomery gave up a season-high four runs against the Rays in his most recent start this past Wednesday, but he has pitched pretty well overall over the last month, with that outing breaking a run of five straight quality starts.
After not getting much run support in his first several starts this season, things have changed for Montgomery recently, in addition to his results and the win-loss results for the Yankees.
In his first eight starts, the Yankees scored 16 runs and won only once. In his last seven starts, they have scored 52 runs and are 6-1.
But it must also be mentioned that three or more runs have been allowed in nine of his starts this season, and while the Yankees have still won the last four times that has happened, they lost the first five times.
It's hard to bet against the Yankees getting the win, both because of the matchhup and because of how the Bronx Bombers keep finding a way to win even in the toughest of situations.
But with the stingy Blackburn on the mound, something has to give. Given his road numbers, there's a lot of value in backing the Athletics to keep this one tight, win or lose.
