2026-27 College Football Playoff Schedule & Bracket
The 2026-27 College Football Playoff begins on Friday, December 18, with the first of four opening-round games and concludes with the national championship on Monday, January 25, 2027.
The first-round matchups will be played on the campuses of the higher-seeded teams. The quarterfinals and semifinals then move to neutral-site bowl games before the final two teams meet for the national championship at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

College Football Playoff Format
The College Football Playoff features 12 teams competing in a single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion.
The top four seeds receive first-round byes and advance directly to the quarterfinals. Seeds No. 5 through No. 12 compete in four first-round games, with the higher-seeded team hosting on campus.

How College Football Playoff Seeding Works
The four highest-ranked teams in the final CFP rankings receive seeds No. 1 through No. 4 and first-round byes. The remaining playoff teams are then seeded based on the final rankings, subject to the placement of any automatic qualifiers that finish outside the top 12.
If an automatic qualifier is ranked outside the top 12, it will be placed at the bottom of the 12-team playoff seeding. If multiple automatic qualifiers fall outside the top 12, the selection committee determines their relative order and places them at the bottom of the field.
The first-round matchups are No. 5 vs. No. 12, No. 6 vs. No. 11, No. 7 vs. No. 10, and No. 8 vs. No. 9. Seeds No. 5 through No. 8 host the opening-round games.
Beginning with the 2026-27 CFP, the No. 1 seed selects its quarterfinal bowl and the semifinal site it would advance to with a quarterfinal win. The No. 2 seed then chooses from the remaining quarterfinal bowl sites, followed by the No. 3 seed. The No. 4 seed is assigned to the remaining quarterfinal.
The bracket remains fixed once it is announced. Teams are not re-seeded after each round, and the selection committee does not alter matchups to avoid regular-season rematches or games between teams from the same conference.
How Are College Football Playoff Teams Selected?
Unlike professional sports leagues, where postseason qualification is determined entirely by standings and tiebreakers, the College Football Playoff field is selected by a committee.
The CFP selection committee releases rankings during the second half of the season before determining the final 12-team field on Selection Day.
Automatic bids are awarded to the champions of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC, along with the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, or Sun Belt. The remaining places are filled by the highest-ranked eligible at-large teams.
Notre Dame also receives a guaranteed playoff berth if it finishes among the top 12 teams in the final CFP rankings.
The selection committee evaluates teams using several factors. Strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, results against common opponents, conference championships, and overall performance can all help separate teams with comparable resumes.
That makes the playoff race about more than a team's win-loss record. Two teams with identical records may have very different resumes depending on who they played and how they performed against their strongest opponents.
The first CFP rankings for the 2026 season will be released on November 3, with subsequent rankings providing an increasingly clear picture of the teams in contention. The final rankings and 12-team bracket will be announced on Selection Day on December 6.

In that situation, a CFP qualification bet may better reflect your expectations than a championship future.
Betting on the CFP After the Bracket Is Announced
Once the 12-team field and bracket are announced, futures betting becomes less theoretical. You know each team's seed, whether it has a first-round bye or home game, its opening opponent, and its potential path toward the national championship.
A team with a first-round bye needs only three wins to capture the national championship, while a team playing in the opening round must win four. However, the easiest path does not necessarily belong to the highest seed. Matchups elsewhere in the bracket can create very different routes to the championship.
Sportsbooks may also offer markets on which teams will reach or advance through particular rounds, make the national championship game, or how far they will progress in the playoff.
Match the market to what you actually expect from the team. If you like a team's path through the bracket but aren't convinced it can win the national championship, betting it to reach the semifinal or championship game may be a better way to express that opinion than betting it to win the title.
Compare the potential return with what the team must accomplish. Two similarly seeded teams can have very different paths based on their opening opponents and potential matchups in later rounds.
Reassess Futures as the CFP Progresses
Futures prices change after every playoff round as teams are eliminated and the remaining paths to the national championship become clearer.
A team that offered value before the CFP may not offer the same value after its championship odds shorten significantly. Before adding another position, consider both the new price and what remains of its path through the bracket.
Existing futures can also create additional options. Depending on the odds and upcoming matchups, you may choose to let a favorable ticket ride, add another position, or hedge your bet to reduce risk or secure a return.
Because futures prices can differ significantly between sportsbooks, line shopping is particularly useful. Even when sportsbooks agree on the leading contenders, the odds available on an individual team or advancement market may vary considerably.
Betting on College Football Playoff Games
Individual CFP games are still college football games, so the fundamentals of handicapping a matchup don't suddenly change when the postseason begins. Rather than treating CFP games like another regular-season Saturday, however, consider the circumstances created by the playoff's format, locations, schedule, and increased betting attention.
Account for the CFP Round, Location, and Conditions
The first round is unique because the higher-seeded teams host games on their campuses. Home-field advantage can be especially significant when a visiting team enters an unfamiliar environment for a win-or-go-home game.
December campus games also introduce conditions that don't exist in the neutral-site rounds. Cold temperatures, wind, rain, or snow can influence passing, kicking, scoring, and player props, making weather forecasts and conditions worth monitoring as kickoff approaches. This can be particularly notable when a warm-weather team travels to play in conditions it rarely encounters.
Beginning with the quarterfinals, the CFP moves to neutral sites. However, "neutral" does not necessarily mean both teams will have equal support or identical travel demands. Geography, fan turnout, travel distance, and familiarity with the region can make some neutral-site environments more favorable to one team.
Preparation and recovery also change by round. Teams receiving first-round byes have additional time to prepare and recover, while their quarterfinal opponents enter after already playing a postseason game. As the playoff progresses, consider each team's turnaround, travel demands, and recovery time rather than treating every round the same.
Evaluate the Betting Market Around Each CFP Game
CFP games attract significant betting interest and generally provide bettors and sportsbooks with more time to evaluate matchups than a typical regular-season game.
Pay attention to opening numbers and subsequent line movement rather than focusing only on the spread or total available when you happen to check the game. A move can change the attractiveness of a wager, particularly when a point spread crosses an important football number.

College Football Playoff History
The College Football Playoff began in the 2014 season, replacing the Bowl Championship Series. The original four-team format featured two national semifinals and a championship game and remained in place through the 2023 season.
The CFP expanded to 12 teams beginning with the 2024 season, introducing first-round games at campus sites and increasing the postseason from three games to 11.
