Daniil Medvedev Novak Djokovic 2023 US Open men's singles final odds prediction picks cover

Two years ago, Daniil Medvedev put an end to a pursuit of history by upsetting Novak Djokovic to win the 2021 US Open men’s singles title.

If he can repeat that feat in today, he will successfully stand in the way of history once again, while claiming his second Grand Slam title.

In 2021, Djokovic was a win away from a calendar-year Grand Slam, and he was favored to down Medvedev in the US Open final and seal the deal.

Instead, Medvedev stunned Djokovic in straight sets to make his Grand Slam breakthrough and keep Rod Laver as the only man to capture a calendar-year Grand Slam in tennis’s modern era.

This time around, Djokovic isn’t chasing a calendar-year Grand Slam, but he is looking to tie Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam singles titles by a man or woman.

As was the case two years ago, Djokovic is a firm favorite. But Medvedev is coming off of a huge win over world number one Carlos Alcaraz, and he has beaten Djokovic enough to know that victory is well within his reach.

Daniil Medvedev vs Novak Djokovic Prediction and Picks

Daniil Medvedev US Open 2023

After his 2021 US Open win, Medvedev reached the final of the next Grand Slam, suffering an agonizing loss to Rafael Nadal in the 2022 Australian Open after winning the first two sets.

Then he failed to make it past the fourth round in his next four Grand Slam appearances, and just as soon as it appeared that he would become the next mainstay at the top of men’s singles, along came Carlos Alcaraz to cement himself as both the present and future.

But after a run to the Wimbledon semifinals–the first time he advanced beyond the fourth round there–Medvedev is now back in a Grand Slam final.

Results for Daniil Medvedev at the 2023 US Open

  • 1st Round: defeated Attila Balazs 6-1, 6-1, 6-0
  • 2nd Round: defeated Christopher O’Connell 6-2, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2
  • 3rd Round: defeated Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6)
  • 4th Round: defeated #13 Alex de Minaur 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2
  • QF: defeated #8 Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
  • SF: defeated #1 Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3

Now all he has to do is do the same thing he did two years ago. Simple enough, right?

Trying to beat Djokovic at the business end of a Grand Slam is up there in terms of difficulty level, alongside beating Joey Chestnut in the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest or beating Max Verstappen in a Formula 1 race these days.

Does he feed off of the pain and anguish of his enemies? All legendary winners aren’t the same, but Djokovic is in the group that feeds off of making the opposition suffer but also thrives when having his own powers tested or questioned.

Even if you aren’t a fan of his work, it is still a marvel to see unfold in real time.

Results for Novak Djokovic at the 2023 US Open

  • 1st Round: defeated Alexandre Muller 6-0, 6-2, 6-3
  • 2nd Round: defeated Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-4, 6-1, 6-1
  • 3rd Round: defeated #32 Laslo Djere 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3
  • 4th Round: defeated Borna Gojo 6-2, 7-5, 6-4
  • QF: defeated #9 Taylor Fritz 6-1, 6-4, 6-4
  • SF: defeated Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4)

It also makes him very, very hard to bet against in these situations, no matter how well his opponent has been playing to this point.

Yet, that is exactly what I’m going to do here. Why? Because Medvedev has shown that he can beat Djokovic in a moment like this, and you aren’t going to get odds of +200 or longer on Medvedev very often.

Prediction: Medvedev to win

Picks: Medvedev +4.5 (-110 at Bovada) Medvedev ML (+215 at Bovada)
