Katin Houser and East Carolina show up against bad teams, but not against good ones - Tulsa East Carolina Picks

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane face off against the East Carolina Pirates on Thursday night for some American Athletic Conference action. The Hurricane is probably just a Category 1 at this point, as they limp into Greenville with their 2-4 record. Tulsa is still searching for their first AAC victory, and aside from beating Abilene Christian, their only other win came against Oklahoma State, which ended up being the final straw for Mike Gundy's job. ECU is 3-3 on the season, losing to both Power Four opponents and at Tulane last Thursday for their first conference loss. Can they turn it on at home? Let's find our favorite picks and find out.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. East Carolina Pirates NCAA Football Insights

Tulsa has nothing to lose. They are 2-4 on the season, again, beating ACU and Oklahoma State. Not even impressive for them. In their losses to New Mexico State, Navy, Tulane and Memphis, they didn't really show up, losing by two scores in three of those four. The defense hasn't shown up at all, and offensively they have only scored 20+ against relevant teams once this year. However being in this position can make a team dangerous, as this could be a spot where they try to play spoiler.

East Carolina is 3-3 on the year, 1-1 in conference play, and they've had a fairly predictable season. They've lost to good teams, such as NC State, BYU and Tulane, while beating the bad ones with wins over Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Army. In their wins against bad teams, ECU has given up a total of nine points while scoring 40.7. But against bad teams in their losses, the Pirates are allowing 28 points per game and are scoring less than 17. Lucky for them, they are at home, and Tulsa is one of those bad teams.

Spread

  • Tulsa +16.5 (-102)

Total

  • Over 53.5 (-115)
  • Under 53.5 (-105)

I think this is a game where East Carolina beats up on another bad team. They have covered the spread in all three games where they were favored, and did so by a ton. ECU beat Campbell by 53 (-29.5), Coastal by 38 in a shutout (-7), and most recently Army by 22 (-3). The Pirates have left no doubt, and tonight that shouldn't change.

Tulsa vs. East Carolina Prediction: East Carolina Wins & Covers, Under 53.5

Best Bet: Tulsa Team Total Under 19.5 (-125) BetOnline

I'll be backing the Pirates defense in this game, but have also taken the spread at -16.5 (-115) as I am trying to be a bit more aggressive on spots I have a strong feeling on. Like I said above, ECU shows up and blows out bad teams, but they can't finish off good ones.

The Pirates nearly out gained NC State and BYU in their losses and put up 400 yards of offense in the process. Tulsa has given up 430 yards of offense against their other AAC opponents, and East Carolina will take advantage, turning it into points. On the flip side, the Pirates defense has held teams to under 290 total yards in their wins, and I don't trust this Golden Hurricane's offense on the road.

Tulsa has turnovers in five straight games, with multiple TOs in three contests and are coming off giving the ball away four times at Memphis. They stayed under 19.5 points in four of their last five this season, only doing so against Navy on a garbage time touchdown when they were down 25 already. Overall, ECU is top 20 in third down conversion rate offensively (48.7%) and top 40 on defense (35.3%). The Golden Hurricanes are 1-4 ATS against FBS teams, and it makes sense considering they are bottom 10 in points per game (15.4) while allowing over 30 to their opponents. Tulsa also ranks bottom 40 in third down conversion rate on both sides of the ball.

I rest my case.
