The Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes meet in Eugene tonight for a Big Ten basketball showdown. Both unranked teams have several losses on their record already, including multiple in conference play for either side. However, only one can win this contest tonight. Will Dana Altman and the Ducks defend their home court? Or will Bruce Thornton and the Buckeyes find a way to pull off this upset while the entire school is looking ahead to tomorrow's Peach Bowl with Indiana? Yes, they are different sports, but you really think the hoopers aren't rooting for the football team? Let's get into our favorite picks and expert analysis.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Oregon Ducks NCAA Basketball Insights

Bruce Thornton and the Buckeyes are out west for a couple games this weekend - Ohio State Oregon Picks

Bruce Thornton and the Buckeyes are out west for a couple games this weekend

Ohio State has four losses this year, most recently losing to Nebraska at home by three points. Prior to that, Ohio State has losses to North Carolina on a neutral site, against Illinois at home and against Pittsburgh on the road. It is worth noting, the Buckeyes four losses were by a combined 13 points. They've been right there in every single contest, and have been decently tested.

As for the Ducks, they are back at home after losing to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on the road in overtime. Personally, I had a lot more faith in this team going into the season, especially with all of their returning players. However, they are just 8-7 this year and 1-3 in Big Ten play. They NEED to turn things around as soon as possible, can they do so tonight?

The Buckeyes have been tested, ranking No. 104 in strength of schedule, but Oregon has played the 33rd toughest so far this year. Will that come into play in this matchup?

Spread

  • Ohio State +2 (-110)
  • Oregon -2 (-110)

Moneyline

  • Ohio State +109
  • Oregon -132

Total

  • Over 153 (-107)
  • Under 153 (-113)

Both are coming off a loss, but there's a little bit of a difference. Oregon is back at home, looking to pick themselves up after a tough loss, while Ohio State is making their first big road trip of the season. In my mind, it's much easier for the Ducks to find some extra motivation in this one to defend their home court.

I actually jumped the gun on this bet and backed the Ducks at -2.5 for -120. Clearly, you can get a much better line than I did, and I would encourage you to just pay the juice on the moneyline as opposed to backing the short spread. But you are all grown adults and can make your own decisions. Regardless, you'll have a better chance to win than me!

Ohio State had to go to Pittsburgh and Northwestern in early December, and played Rutgers on the road last Friday. They played West Virginia in Cleveland and North Carolina in Atlanta, but flying all the way out to Eugene is a different animal. Crossing three time zones and trying to play a game that starts at 12:30 a.m. local Columbus could be very difficult. especially adding in the fact that this is their third game in just six days. The legs are exhausted.

Oregon will speed things up and make Ohio State work on the glass. Christoph Tilly is going to have his hands full trying to contain Nate Bittle and Kwame Evans, making me give the Ducks the nod in the front court. Let's see the Ducks win tonight, because I doubt they do so tomorrow on the gridiron.
