The NCAA announced it would be expanding the tournament to 76 teams beginning next season - NCAA Tournament Expands

College Basketball fans, pour one out for the 68 team tournament. On Tuesday, the NCAA announced that they have initiated the final steps to expand both the men's and women's NCAA Basketball tournaments to 76 teams beginning next year. This March Madness expansion has been discussed for multiple years now, and personally, I have been a hater of the idea.

I didn't like when they went from 64 to 68 teams. This forced "automatic qualifying" teams to play their way into the Round of 64 by creating the First Four in Dayton. Now, with 76 teams in the field, we are going to get an even bigger bubble and more play-in games before the "real" tournament starts.

What Will the Expanded Tournament Look Like?

How is this going to play out? We don't have all the details right now, but eight teams playing in four games in Dayton, Ohio, currently known as the "First Four" will extend to 12 games behind playing by 24 different teams, adding an additional site as well.

These games would take place on the Tuesday and Wednesday following Selection Sunday, with the traditional 64-team tournament beginning on Thursday. That means that every 15 and 16 seed will have to play early, and winning their conference tournament no longer means they make the Round of 64, which is a horrible precedent to set in my eyes. We will also have more 11 and 12 seeds playing in to the opening round as well.

If you could promise me that this expansion would lead to more mid major schools being included, I might be on board. But anyone with two brain cells knows that's not the case. This expansion is simply to get more Power Five teams into the tournament, meaning we are likely going to have teams with a sub. 500 record playing in these opening games.

I do not agree with the decision at all. I do not like it, but of course, money runs the world, and these extra games are a great way for the NCAA to fatten up their pockets once again.
