Main Event: Anthony Hernandez vs Gregory Rodrigues Preview – Middleweight

Home Town Favorite Anthony Hernandez Faces Off With Gregory Rodrigues

The Main Event of UFC Sacramento features a hometown favorite. Anthony Hernandez, who grew up in Dunnigan a just a short drive from Sacramento will take on the Brazilian Gregory Rodrigues.

The bout is scheduled for 5 rounds but considering the styles of both fighters, it is likely fans wont see all 5 rounds. A match up of pressure vs power, Rodrigues will look to break Hernandez early before he can take over.

Rodrigues is a seasoned veteran in the UFC with 13 bouts since joining the UFC in 2021. His contract was not given easily, Rodrigues was first featured on Dana White's Contender series in 2020.

The match up came against Jordan Williams in which Rodrigues suffered a brutal knock out loss. Many fighters would never be the same, but Rodrigues is a different breed and went on to win back to back fights in the LFA promotion.

By bouncing back with 2 flashy knock outs in a row, the UFC finally called him up to the big leagues a year after his contender series bout. In his tenure since Rodrigues has been somewhat of a hit or miss type of fighter.

Can Rodrigues Continue His Win Streak?

Rodrigues has not been able to put together a long winning streak just yet. He has 3 separate 3 fight winning streaks in the UFC with 2 of them being ended by a brutal knock out loss.

Knockout losses have been the story of Rodrigues career despite his power and aggression in the weight class. In 25 professional fights Rodrigues has been knocked out brutally 4x now, his Achilles heel so to say.

The chin seems to be Rodrigues only weakness, as he is constantly dominating in the wrestling & holds massive power for the division. Power comes from his frame, standing at 6'3 he is massive for middleweight.

Another hurdle for Rodrigues has been his cardio and gassing out of fights early. This is likely due to his aggression and high pace from the opening bell.

The cardio may be his downfall in this match up with Hernandez as he has made a career out of breaking fighters late into the bout. Hernandez is especially hungry in this match up as he is looking to bounce back from a knockout loss to current champ Sean Strickland.

For the second time in his career Hernandez was finished with shots to the body. The question of Hernandez being soft to the body was most likely answered in the bout, as Strickland was able to dismantle him early.

A loss like that is not exactly something to hang your head about though, considering Strickland went on to reclaim the title. The loss did in fact set Hernandez back as he was knocking on the door of a title shot going into the bout.

Will Fluffy Bounce Back?

Hernandez is still a top contender of the division but will need to put together a few impressive performances to state his claim for the title shot. Tonight could very well be the start of that especially with the hometown crowd on his side.

A wrestle heavy style is the forefront of Hernandez game, often trying to get the fight to the ground asap. Once on the ground Hernandez has a very deep submission arsenal at his disposal as a highly decorated BJJ artist.

Takedowns have never come easy to him though, often struggling early and wearing down his opponents to get them. In many of his fights, Hernandez has to take a lot of damage before he is able to takeover with his pressure.

Hernandez will be at a significant size disadvantage here which could make some bettors a little weary. I personally think this is an advantage instead for the type of fighter Hernandez is.

The smaller body will be able to get to the hips that much easier to secure takedowns. Once they are on the ground, I am not confident at all that Rodrigues will be able to hang in there with the combination of Hernandez ground strikes and submission skills.

This is the first time the UFC has returned to Sacramento in some time and they have treated the fans with a home town match up. I expect Hernandez to bounce back and break Rodrigues late in the fight for an impressive finish.
