The UFC is taking the action north of the border today for a massive 13 fight card at UFC Edmonton. In typical fashion, the UFC has stacked the card top to bottom with Canadian fighters to cater to the home town crowd.
There is bigger home town fighter then Mike Malott who takes on Joaquin Buckley in the Main Event. The bout has very high stakes, as Malott is looking to earn a top 5 fight and keep working his way to the title.
At 34 years old, time is running out for the Canadian prospect so this may be the biggest opportunity of his career. The Co – Main event also features a home town favorite in Jasmine Jasudavicius when she takes on Erin Blanchfield.
Unlike her counterpart Malott, she has a much tougher match up with the highly regarded prospect Erin Blanchfield. The bout has equal stakes though, with the winner likely getting the next title shot.
The countdown to violence has begun and we are 5 hours away from the preliminary card! Lets get right into a preview of the Main Card live from Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

Main Event: Mike Malott vs Joaquin Buckley Preview – Welterweight

The Hometown Favorite Mike Malott (Right) Takes On Joaquin Buckley (Left) In the Main Event
The UFC is taking the show North of the border to showcase one of the hometown superstars of Canada. Mike Malott will get his second headlining opportunity when he takes on Joaquin Buckley tonight in his back yard of Alberta.
Joaquin Buckley is also taking on his third headlining opportunity with this match up. His first opportunity against Kamaru Usman did not go as planned, losing a 5 round decision.
The loss was the start of a skid for Buckley who went into the match up riding a 6 fight winning streak. To make matters worse, he has since lost another close decision to Sean Brady making that 2 straight losses.
Buckley started his career bouncing back and forth between middleweight and welterweight. In 2022 he made the final decision to stay at welterweight and his career finally took off winning those 6 fights in a row.
The Usman match up marked the first real step up in competition for Buckley, failing that test and his next against top competition. Malott may not be a similar ranking as Usman & Brady but he is arguably a much more skilled prospect then both.
Buckley entirely relies on his big power and athleticism to carry himself to wins. That kind of mindset only gets you so far in the fight game, eventually you get to a level of competition where it does not matter.
In most fights Buckley makes very costly mistakes, including in the grappling department. He is a decent offensive wrestler, but if he is not the aggressor moving forward he can easily be taken down while moving backwards.
When he is on the offensive side of wrestling, he often sticks his neck where it does not belong trying to secure the takedown. Buckley often gives up his back trying to get back to his feet as well, a big no no when taking on such a skilled BJJ artist like Malott.
Additionally Buckley's chin failed him many times at middleweight, but not yet at welterweight. I have to imagine with more time and fight miles, his chin will start to go at welterweight as well.
It certainly seems like a lot of the holes in Buckley's game are ones that Malott is great at exploiting. Mike Malott is coming into the match up with all of the momentum, riding a 4 fight winning streak.
The win streak should actually be 8 fights, but Malott was taught the veteran lesson by Neil Magny in 2024. Despite winning 14 minutes of a 15 minute fight, Malott gassed out late in the 3rd round and Magny turned the tables to TKO Malott in the final seconds.
The massive upset marked the first time Malott had lost in Canada during his UFC tenure. He was on an impressive run of 3 straight finish victories, 2 coming by way of submission showing his high level BJJ skills.
Malott has since turned a corner in his career, looking career best while showing off improvements in his cardio and striking skills. Recently moving to team Alpha Male with head coach Uriah Faber, the move has proven to be exactly what the Canadian prospect needed at this point in his career.
At 34 years old, Malott is not exactly considered a "young" prospect, but he is finally becoming a complete MMA fighter. This match up is most likely the biggest of his career, with the winner getting a top 5 fight and being that much closer to a title shot.
Malott had his momentum to the title ruined in his first chance, I expect him to rise to the occasion this time out and finish Joquin Buckley by way of submission within the first 3 rounds of the bout.
