The UFC has a massive slate of fights scheduled for Saturday night with 2 title fights on the docket for UFC 330. A small shake up has taken place after Jose Ochoa was forced to pull out, Jalin Turner vs Kaue Fernandes has moved to the main card to replace it.

The Fighters are scheduled to weigh in today, so barring any other catastrophes the card will remain as is. Many MMA fans across the globe are highly anticipating the title bouts, as both champions are looking to make their first title defenses.

Islam Makhachev claimed the welterweight belt last year and will be making his first defense against top Irish prospect Ian Garry. Garry has earned the right of #1 contender and this match up made the most sense for all involved parties.

The Womens title fight is a very even match up between decorated grapplers as well. Current Champion Mackenzie dern will test her skillset against red hot contender Gillian Robertson.

Main Event: Islam Makhachev (C) vs Ian Machado Garry Preview – Welterweight Championship

Islam Makhachev is looking to continue his legendary run Saturday night. The bout will be his first title defense at his new weight class, after his long reign as Lightweight champion.

This is sure to be his toughest test to date as he takes on the length striker Ian Machado Garry. The Irish prospect has been on a crash course for the Welterweight belt since joining the UFC in 2021.

A once highly touted prospect coming from the Cage Warriors promotion, Garry has been on an impressive run. Now with 11 UFC bouts in his tenure, Garry will finally get a chance at the title after accumulating 10 wins and only 1 loss.

Often times he makes a fool of himself when given the mic and many have judged him for it. Every time hes on the mic it is just more fuel for the media to make stories about, which creates more problems in the end.

His skills have never been in question for most UFC fans, it has always been his mouth since Garry put together an 8 fight winning streak to start his career. The UFC did a great job building him up slowly by steadily giving him a little step up in competition each fight.

On that run Garry proved exactly who he is and passed every test until he ran into Shavkat Rakhmonov on short notice. Garry actually found great success in the match up showing quality striking and even some grappling by securing Rakhmonovs back for over half a round.

Will Garry Finally Claim Gold?

Unfortunately it all was not enough and Garry came out on the losing end of a decision. In a weird case of events it seems their careers went opposite ways after that fight, as fans have not seen Rakhmonov since and Garry will be fighting for the belt.

After the loss Garry bounced back correctly putting back to back wins together over top prospects. First he absolutely dismantled the hyped prospect Carlos prates, then he went on to dominate the former champion Belal Muhammad.

The level of his performances have given the UFC no choice but to make him the rightful #1 contender. Islam Makhachev has never fought someone with the size and level of striking as Garry which is what makes this match up so exciting.

In his first showing at Welterweight, Islam proved the jump up in size was not a challenge to him. The now double champ, dismantled Jack Della Maddalena over the course of 5 rounds.

The scorecards were entirely one sided, as Makhachev dominated for all 5 rounds. It came as a surprise to many to see Islam have the ability to dominate in the wrestling due to the jump up in weight.

Makhachev did not seem undersized at all as he was already a big fighter for lightweight, welterweight seems like his natural home. Since joining the UFC in 2015, he has been on an incredible run going 17-1 in 18 bouts.

Can Makhachev Secure His First Title Defense?

The lone loss came in just his second UFC fight, where he was knocked out rather quickly by Adriano Martins. Since he has rattled off 15 straight wins with his eyes set on breaking even more records along the way.

The dagestani prospect has proven his skillset is much more then just dominate takedowns. He has finished 11 of his 17 wins mostly relying on his submission skills to get the job done.

In other times he has shown just how flashy his striking can be by knocking out legends like Alex Volkonovski & King Green. At 34 years old I believe Makhachev is somewhat of a finished product and I actually believe he is closer to the end of his career then most expect.

Makhachev has talked about how his Mother does not want him to continue fighting many times before. Now that he has secured double champ status and looking to defend for the first time, a win could mean he walks away from the sport.

A champion in 2 weight classes, with multiple title defenses and high level wins. At that point there is not much else to fight for besides money, and he has proven the money is not what drives him to be champion.

Co – Main Event: Mackenzie Dern (C) vs Gillian Robertson Preview – Strawweight Championship

The Co – Main Event of the evening will mark the first title defense for newly crowned strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern. She claimed the belt in a vacant title fight against Virna Jandiroba in October of 25′ by way of decision.

The first title defense for Dern is not an easy one at all as she will square off with Gillian Robertson. If there is anyone in the division that could match Derns grappling skills it would be Robertson in my opinion.

Not to mention that Robertson is coming into this fight on a 5 fight winning streak looking career best. The 31 year old prospect is a seasoned veteran of the UFC as well with 20 bouts in her tenure.

Robertson first got her shot on The Ultimate Fighter way back in 2017. An impressive submission victory in the season finale earned her contract where she then jumped off to a hot start with 2 more submission victories in her first 2 bouts.

The finishing upside of Robertson is what has made her so dangerous throughout her career. She has 19 wins on her record with 12 coming by way of finish and more specifically, 9 by submission.

Along the way she has accumulated many records in the strawweight division. Initially she did not find much success in the UFC due to her fighting up a division at Women's fly weight.

Can Robertson Finally Claim Gold?

Robertson was initially a 50/50 fighter, but since dropping down to strawweight has been reborn into a top contender. Since the move she has gone 7-1 and earned herself a title shot with highlight reel finishes.

In that span she has finished 4 of the 7 wins, a complete anomaly in womens MMA. At strawweight she has a size advantage in most bouts which she has fully been able to take advantage of.

There is no doubt Mackenzie Dern will have her hands full Saturday night. In her first title defense, Dern will have to show off more then her grappling to get the job done here.

A true test of skills at Strawweight and Mackenzie has proven to be ready for that challenge. Once a highly touted prospect upon her arrival, Dern now has 16 bouts in her UFC tenure.

She has been forced to pay her dues along the way but has received a full push from the UFC along the way. In 16 bouts she has earned a record of 11-5 , with 5 wins coming by submission and the remaining 6 by way of decision.

Will Dern Make Her First Title Defense?

The 5 losses on her record are nothing to scoff at either, losing to some of the top contenders in the division along the way. Each loss presented a learning opportunity for Dern and she took full advantage of them.

Her grappling has always been top notch as she is a decorated BJJ black belt and champion. Early on in her career she struggled with the striking aspect of MMA, which left her a rather 1 dimensional fighter.

To make matters worse, she began to struggle securing traditional takedowns. Dern had the high level submission skills, but did not have the wrestling aspect to get the fight to where she wanted it to be.

Over the years MMA fans have seen vast improvements in both areas from Dern. She has certainly turned a corner in her career and her win over Jandiroba for the title was the culmination of it.

Dern was able to secure takedowns over Jandiroba, as well as defend them. She out struck Jandiroba as well and secured the belt by a sizeable margin.

If the same version of Mackenzie Dern that fought Jandiroba shows up Saturday, Robertson may be in for a long night. I expect Dern to make even more strides in her game as she is in her prime at 33, that all starts Saturday Night.
