Featured Bout: Bella Mir vs Alex Apodaca Preview – Women's Bantamweight

Opponents Bella Mir and Alex Apodaca face off during the weigh-in for Dana White's Contender Series Season 10
A very interesting match up caps off the week 3 installment of Dana White's Contender series tonight. UFC legend and former 2x Heavyweight champion Frank Mir will be a proud father tonight, as his daughter looks to make her UFC debut.
Mir will take on the coaching role and will be in Bella's corner tonight. Due to her last name the hype behind Bella Mir going into this match up is an all time high.
The bright side is, her skills should entirely live up to all the hype that surrounds her right now. Honestly due to her grappling credentials, I do not believe she is getting enough hype in this match up.
Bella was a 4x Nevada state wrestling champion in high school, and went on to have a successful collegiate career as well. While attending the University of Iowa, a renowned wrestling program.
Shortly after transferring to North Central College, she won the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling National Championship at 145 lbs. The grappling credentials do not stop there, as she is a 3x IBJJF National champion to boot.
Once graduating Bella has now turned her focus to MMA as she looks to continue her fathers legacy. I would say she is off to a great start, starting her career 4-0 with 3 first round submission wins.
Will Mir Live Up To The Hype?
It is only a matter of time before she really starts to master the art of striking. Once she starts letting her hands go more, she will become a very dangerous opponent at 135 lbs due to the versatility in her game.
The UFC has done her right in her debut, serving her up an ally oop to slam dunk in her first match up. Alex Apodaca is a rather unknown fighter also with just 3 pro fights on her record.
This could explain the moneyline price in the match up as Bella Mir has become the biggest moneyline favorite in UFC history. In my opinion it is for due reason as Apodaca is at a severe disadvantage in the grappling department.
Striking may tell a different story though. Apodaca is fighting out of Factory X muay thai, a renowned gym in the MMA scene featuring head coach Marc Montoya.
Her professional record may be misleading to many fight fans. When you dig a little deeper, Apodaca had an extensive amateur career going 4-2 in 6 Amateur fights.
Apodaca may go on to have a successful UFC tenure after this bout, but make no mistake she is being thrown to the wolves here. I expect Bella Mir to showcase improvements in her striking to capitalize on this opportunity and finish Apodaca within 2 rounds.
