White Sox vs Diamondbacks Preview

Michael Soroka

Down in the desert, a rubber match takes place between the Diamondbacks and the White Sox.

Arizona bounced back last night with an 11-7 win after dropping the series opener, 11-5.

On Thursday, right-hander Michael Soroka will look to secure the series win for Arizona, while Chicago counters with fellow righty Davis Martin.

Through four starts, Soroka has been sharp, posting a 2.78 ERA, 3.01 FIP and 1.06 WHIP, along with a 24% strikeout-to-walk ratio.

He also draws a favorable matchup. Since the start of April, the White Sox rank 26th in OPS (.653) and 25th in both wRC+ (88) and ISO (.117) against right-handed pitching.

There's not much to fear from this lineup at the moment, and it sets up well for Soroka to deliver another strong outing.

Perhaps the same optimism can be applied to Davis Martin going against Arizona's bats, too. The Diamondbacks have struggled against righties, ranking 26th in wRC+ (83) and 25th in OPS (.658). The lone bright spot is their ability to produce power, sitting 14th in ISO (.151).

Still, those numbers are disappointing for a team with the caliber of talent Arizona has.

Maybe facing Martin can provide their offense a spark tonight.

You may be wondering why, considering his 2.16 ERA, but his underlying metrics suggest regression. His expected ERA sits at 4.74, with a 4.06 xFIP. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is lower than you'd hope for at 13.8%, and more importantly, he carries an astonishing 53% hard-hit rate.

That vulnerability, paired with Arizona's power potential, could set up for a big night from the home side, and I'm willing to back that notion.

White Sox vs Diamondbacks Best Bet: Arizona Run Line -1.5 (+135)

MLB record: 32-21-1 (+10.19 units)
