MLB Picks and Predictions for Wednesday, May 27

Arizona Diamondbacks vs San Francisco Giants

The Snakes are seeking a three-game sweep of the Giants on Wednesday afternoon, and they hope that Michael Soroka can be the arm to guide them toward that.

His 6-2 record, 3.27 ERA and 3.34 xFIP are strong signs that he's capable of doing so, though his .331 BABIP and 4.42 xERA may suggest some regression could be coming.

However, the main focus for me is San Francisco's starting pitcher, right-hander Trevor McDonald. The 25-year-old has been an interesting case through four starts this season. His 4.76 ERA doesn't jump off the page, but his 2.90 xFIP, 2.73 SIERA, ground ball rate north of 60% and barrel rate below 5% paint a much more encouraging picture.

The underlying numbers suggest he's been a bit unlucky, and that positive regression could be on the horizon.

I believe we see that come to fruition this afternoon as the Giants look to avoid getting swept at home. At even money or better, it's worth a shot on San Francisco's moneyline.

Pick: Giants Moneyline (+105)

Los Angeles Angels vs Detroit Tigers

Jose Soriano throwing heat for the Angels

Let's move to the Motor City, where the Angels seek their fifth-straight win. Meanwhile, the Tigers are losers in their past four of five contests and hope Casey Mize can steer them back in the right direction.

Mize has been sturdy this year, but his offense hasn't helped him. He's 2-3, but has a 2.47 ERA and a 3.76 xFIP. He needs to do a better job at forcing grounders, as hit rate is below 35%, but otherwise he's been solid.

Will he be able to maintain against one of the hotter offenses in baseball is the question, though. Over the past week, Los Angeles has a 140 wRC+, .299 ISO and a .830 OPS against right-handed pitchers. If the momentum carries over, then Mize could be due for a rough outing.

And even if he's able to manage, what will his offense bring to the table? Over the past week, the Tigers are dead last in wRC+ (37) versus right-handed pitching. They also have an ISO of .065 and an OPS of .496.

These are two offenses trending in complete opposite directions.

Also, the righty they'll be facing is Jose Soriano, who has been a stud for the Angels this year. His 2.44 ERA, 3.21 xFIP and 52% ground ball rate are a few of many reasons why we should look to support him and his squad tonight.

Pick: Angels Moneyline (-102)
