We are headed out West to the literal City of Angels tonight as Los Angeles hosts the Detroit Tigers while both teams return to play post All Star Break. As things currently stand, neither team is performing well. The Angels are sitting in dead last of the NL West, 11.5 games out of first place, and even 3.5 out of fourth. The Tigers, who were once on top of the AL Central, now sit in fourth place, 6.5 games behind the leaders. But they are safely 6.5 games ahead of my Kansas City Royals who bring up the rear. Reid Detmers has gotten lit up recently, giving up five earned runs in three of his last four outings. Will he figure it out tonight?
Both Detroit and Los Angeles were on a two game losing streak heading into the break. But one needed the pause a lot more than the other. The Tigers had won six of their last eight, and were 9-3 in their last 12 before the All Star festivities. On the other side of things, the Angels had lost three of their last four, and were just 2-10 in their last 12.
Maybe the break helped the Angels and hurt the Tigers, but based on tonight's starting pitchers, I'm still siding with Detroit.

Troy Melton has been rock solid since being called up by the Tigers, with fives wins and two straight shutout starts
Tigers vs. Angels Prediction: Tigers Win and Cover, Over 8.5

Troy Melton is one of the hottest pitchers in the league right now. He's 5-1 on the year, has allowed just two earned runs in his last four games, and has only allowed three or more runs in just one start. His ERA drops to 1.33 on the road this year, and he's already got a sub 1.00 WHIP. Despite the Angels hitting .248 in July so far, their batting average drops to .227 at home this year, 13 points down from their season average. They will struggle tonight.
As for the Tigers, they face lefty Reid Detmers, who has been lit up. His splits get slightly worse in his own stadium, and he's gone two straight starts allowing five earned runs on seven hits. That includes four home runs and four walks. To take it even further, he has allowed 17 earned runs in his last four starts. He simply doesn't have it, and the Tigers' bats will feast.
