Max Muncy has been great this year. The lefty's hitting .263 on the year with 16 home runs, 47 runs scored and 33 RBI. He's been great on the road this year, batting .286 away from Dodger Stadium with a .511 SLG.
On the bump for Minnesota is Joe Ryan and he's been elite this year. Ryan's got a 2.99 ERA this year and he's giving up just 0.9 HR/9. He's held opposing hitters to a .212 batting average and he's got a 30% strikeout rate at home.
So why are we targeting Muncy? Ryan's got a 60% fly ball rate his year and usually that's okay here in Minnesota, but not with winds blowing out toward center field at 12 mph.
Muncy's hitting .263 against righties this year and he's 1/3 against Ryan with the singular hit being a home run. Twelve of Muncy's 16 HRs have been against righties and Ryan tends to lean a ton on his 4-seam fastball against lefties.
Muncy's hitting .359 against that pitch this year with a .703 SLG and a 70% HH. Against righties, that jumps to .370, with a .759 SLG and 72% HH.
Tonight feels like the perfect spot for Muncy to get his third home runs of the month.
Jordan Walker's been going through a dry spell and despite hitting 18 home runs this year, just 3 have come this month. The 24-year old is hitting .291 this month, but the ball just hasn't been flying.
Walker went 2/4 in the Cardinals game last night against this same Diamondbacks team and both hits came off lefty Eduardo Rodriguez. Walker's just been so good against southpaws.
Walker's batting average jumps to .315 against lefties, with a .603 SLG and 6 of his 18 home runs coming against left handed pitching. This month just a quarter of his plate appearances came against lefties and the numbers speak for themselves.
In 23 plate appearences, Walker recorded 11 hits (.478 BA) 2 home runs (.783 SLG) and 6 RBI. Tonight he faces a rookie lefty making his debut for the Diamondbacks on the road at Busch Stadium.
