Monaco Grand Prix Race Analysis

Though with all its history and prestige the Monaco Grand Prix is not the race it used to be. Nowadays, the race is more like a parade than a race, with its lack of straights and overtaking opportunities, making the circuit a bit slower than the rest of the tracks on the calendar.

The cars are just too big and too fast for the short, narrow circuit to offer any opportunity for excitement. This year is only accentuated by the fact that the FIA has put out new restrictions for this race; limiting power output of the battery to taper off at 200KM/HR instead of the previous 300KM/HR.

Another point that must be brought to light is that our championship leaders Mercedes have lost the "engine loophole." Sparing the details, Mercedes had an engine mechanic allowing them to be faster than the rest of the teams. The terms of it were shady but legal at best, but nonetheless that loophole is now closed and Mercedes have lost around 0.3 seconds per lap.

Free Practice and Quali Breakdown

Through 3 free practice the results have looked very different compared to the first couple races we have had this year. So far this season we have seen the Mercedes dominate the Free Practices, Sprints, Qualification and Races.

This weekend we have seen the Ferrari lead the free practices. In the first 2 practices their drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc go 1st and 2nd in times. In the 3rd practice we saw Mercedes driver in Kimi Antonelli find pace in the car and take 1st, with the Ferrari drivers right behind him in 2nd and 3rd.

Ferrari in the 3rd free practice seemed to struggle with breaking issues on track. If they want to win in Monaco they must resolve that issue before qualifying and the race. There was also major compalaints from all drivers on low tire temperature, affecting the ability to have grip on the track.

Qualification saw the Ferrari dominating through all 3 periods. But it was once again Kimi Antonelli and the Mercedes that stole the show being able to secure pole position. Red Bull also had an impressive showing in qualifying. Meanwhile Alpine Driver Pierre Gasly managed a top 10 grid spot as well.

Qualifying Results:

  1. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)
  2. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
  3. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)
  4. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
  5. Isack Hadjar (Red Bull)
  6. George Russell (Mercedes)
  7. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
  8. Lando Norris (McLaren)
  9. Pierre Gasly (Alpine)
  10. Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls)

Monaco Grand Prix Predictions & Best Bets

Kimi Antonelli to win the race +190 on Lucky Rebel

kimi race win

The young phenom continues to impress in just his 2nd season in Formula 1. Today in qualifying he and the Mercedes car struggled early on but managed to stick around just enough to sneak into Q3. In Q3 he managed a magical lap to secure pole position by just 0.043 seconds.

Antonelli's performance this season has been one of pure skill, courage, and little bit of luck. Becoming the first teenager to ever lead the championship and win consecutive races. His success has made a believer out of me and it should for you as well.

With the nature of the race being so short in length, there isn't a lot of room for the cars to get away from each other. Lack of long straights or exciting corners don't allow these cars to truly show off their performance. Whoever wins this race, (hopefully Kimi Antonelli) will not have much time to spare to his competitors.

hadjar crash in monaco

These are two interesting lines in my opinion. Like previously stated Monaco isn't a track where overtaking and speed are a mainstay. The FIA is quite literally taking steps to ensure there aren't wrecks or crashes at this year's race. Limiting the power output means the drivers will not be pushing their cars to the absolute limit. Meaning less chance for a mechanical failure, crash, or wreck to happen.

Not saying we won't see one or the other, honestly, I'm sure there will be a few DNFs (Did Not Finish). But with the course itself and these new restrictions for this race the chances of both happening are slim.
