A new era begins in Philadelphia, only a few seasons removed from winning Super Bowl LII in a stunning upset of the New England Patriots. Super Bowl-winning head coach Doug Pedersen was shown the door after a four-win season, and former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni is now at the helm.

The change on the sidelines isn’t the only notable development, as Jalen Hurts now has the reins as the starting quarterback. It was only two years ago that Carson Wentz signed a huge contract extension, but after losing his starting role to Hurts late last season, Wentz was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in March. Hurts, who was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, had some impressive moments in his stint last season, but now he has to translate that into consistent success to keep the starting role and lead the Eagles back to the postseason. One of the weapons that Hurts will have at his disposal is 2020 Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith, who joins up with his former Alabama teammate in the City of Brotherly Love.

On the defensive side of the ball, veteran defensive linemen Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham were both Pro Bowlers last season. But the Eagles were not one of the NFL’s better defenses last season, and even if offensive improvement occurs, it will mean little if defensive improvement doesn’t occur as well.

Immediate success is not the expectation this season, according to the oddsmakers. Hurts is an exciting talent, and his development will certainly be worth watching. But as is the case for the team they defeated in the Super Bowl over three years ago, there appears to be a long way to go before those heights are within reach again.
