tennis

We should see at least a few epic encounters between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic next year, but there might be one more in store for 2023 with #1 and #2 set to face off today in the semifinals of this year's ATP Finals.

After losing to Alexander Zverev in his first match in Turin, Alcaraz defeated Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev in his final two group matches to finish first in his group.

Djokovic won his opener over Holger Rune, then lost his second match against home favorite Jannik Sinner. But while he won his final group match against Hubert Hurkacz, it wasn't enough to come out on top of his group, as Sinner won all three of his matches.

So, instead of Sunday's final, we get to see the top two players in the men's singles rankings face off in the semifinals. Who will take the win in their fourth head-to-head meeting of the year? Oddsmakers give Djokovic a slight edge to pick up his third win.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic Prediction and Picks

Carlos Alcaraz ATP Finals 2023

When Alcaraz and Djokovic met last, they played out a fantastic nearly four-hour final at Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

In that match in August, Alcaraz claimed the first set, was up a break in the second set, and had a match point at 6-5 in the second-set tiebreak.

But Djokovic fended off potential defeat and overcame squandering a break advantage and four match points in the third set to win the match, with the final set also decided in a tiebreak.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic Head-to-Head Results

  • 8/20/2023 (2023 Western & Southern Open Final): Djokovic won 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-4)
  • 7/16/2023 (2023 Wimbledon Final): Alcaraz won 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4
  • 69/2023 (2023 French Open SF): Djokovic won 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1
  • 5/7/2022 (2022 Madrid Open SF): Alcaraz won 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5)

Those four matches have taken a combined 15 hours and 48 minutes, and their two best-of-three matches have gone 3:58 and 3:38. To date, their shortest match has been that French Open semifinal, which would have gone longer than 3:15 had Alcaraz's efforts not been adversely affected by full body cramps.

Also, all three of Djokovic's group matches went the maximum three sets, with his matches against Rune and Sinner each going over three hours. So, prepare for a long match if you plan to tune into or follow the action.

Also, expect to see at least one tie-break. Along with there being at least one tie-break in three of the four previous matches between these two tennis titans, all three of Djokovic's group matches featured at least one tie-break (two against Rune, two against Sinner, and one against Hurkacz).
