Missing out on a ticket to an eighth straight World Cup meant that qualification for Qatar was an absolute must, and while they didn’t make it easy on themselves at all, the USMNT did what needed to be done to avoid back-to-back disappointments.

The reward for successful qualification is a spot in Group B with England, Wales, and Iran. England enter the tournament as one of the favorites to go all the way, but it is the USA who has the edge over Wales as the oddsmakers’ choice to join England in the round of 16.
