Our final Round of 32 matchup happens in my own hometown of Kansas City tonight, as Colombia and Ghana meet at Arrowhead Stadium. Colombia ended up topping their group, slotting them with the third place team in Group L for this showdown to open up the knockout rounds for both teams. Colombia was unbeaten in their three group stage matches, and was a literal big toe away from winning all three. They absolutely dominated Portugal in their final group stage match, and had the potential winning goal called back by VAR in stoppage time. Regardless, Colombia still ended up on top of Group K. We talk so much about the Colombian attack, but to me their defense has been the difference maker in this tournament.
Ghana is all defense. Their attack has been unimpressive, but their defense looked great in their scoreless draw against England. Unfortunately, they blew a lead against Croatia in their final group stage match to fall to third place in the quad. Can they wake up and remain focused against Colombia tonight?

In all three of their group games, Colombia controlled over 55% of possession and won the expected goals battle. If you do those two things, you typically get good results, just like the Colombians did. Now they face a Ghana side who should know they are outmatched in the attack. Ghana's best shot at moving on is keeping this one as low scoring as possible, so I expect them to use the same tactics they did against England.
In that match, Ghana controlled just 21% of possession, created just one shot on target, and generated 0.17 expected goals, while allowing England 1.36 xG. If they play that way against Colombia, I have faith in the South American side being able to finish and put one or two in the back of the net.
Like I said in my best bets article, I do not see Ghana scoring, so taking Colombia to win to nil at plus money could also be a move. Regardless, I see Colombia dominating defensively and being able to at least net one, which should be enough to win this match in 90 minutes.
