Big game out of the Metro Division tonight at the Prudential Center. The New Jersey Devils will host the New York Islanders before the Olympic break. These two teams last played a month ago and the Islanders handed them a beating 9-0.
New York is 31-21-5 and third in the Metro Division. They come into this game off a win over the Penguins in overtime on Tuesday. The Islanders are 5-5-0 in their last ten games, 15-11-3 on the road and 11-6-2 in divisional games.
This division is so tight that there is no room for error. New York is only two points ahead of fourth place and are a point shy of getting a wild card spot. The entire Eastern Conference is honestly completely up for grabs in both divisions.
Offensively the Islanders have been up and down this season. They low in the league for goals scored and shots on goal per game. Like I always say, their power play is trash again. Now on defense, it's a different story. They rank fifth best in goals allowed and eighth in penalty kill.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin is expected to get the start. He is 19-13-2 this season with a 2.47 GAA and a .915 save percentage. Sorokin is 7-3-0 in this last ten starts that include 3 shutouts.

New Jersey will try to break two-game losing streak at home tonight

Devils forward Jack Hughes chases after Islanders forward Anders Lee.
The Devils are 28-26-2 this year and are seventh in the Metro Division. They come into this game on a two-game skid after a shutout loss to the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. New Jersey is 5-5-0 in their last ten games, 13-11-2 at home and 4-10-2 in divisional matchups.
After a good start to the season, the Devils have been on nothing but a downward spiral. They're currently in a position where they need a miracle to happen to make the playoffs. Jack Hughes will miss the game with a lower body injury, and it makes you wonder if they're done for the season.
On offense, they rank third worst for goals scored and second worst for shooting percentage. They pepper the net, ranking sixth in the league, but if you can't hit the net than it doesn't matter as much. The Devils power play ranks right in the middle of the league.
Middle of the road is the story for this defense. They rank in the middle of the league for goals allowed and shots on goal allowed, which isn't terrible. New Jersey commits the fifth least penalties in the league and kill off 79% of them.
In net, we're expected to see goalie Jacob Markstrom. He has a 15-13-1 record with a 3.03 GAA and a .882 save percentage. Let's check out the odds and get into the Islanders vs. Devils picks.

This line confuses me a bit. The Islanders have proved themselves this season and vs. the Devils, so it makes me wonder. Either way, bait or not – give me the Isles at -110 value. We're getting great value and a team who needs to win.
We've seen the Islanders play well and are very aware of the standings. One or two losses can set them back right out of the playoffs. Games like these are a must win and against a team where it can feel like home ice with the number of fans being so close to home.
I like for Mat Barzal to get 3 or more shots on goal. Kid is coming off a four shot game and also had four in his last game vs. the Devils. With Bo Horvat back in the lineup, he has his linemate back to set up him.
Another play I like is Sorokin to get over his saves line. I don't see another 9-0 game and the Devils can shoot so all we need is them to go on net. The line will probably be around 25-26 saves and he should see around 30 shots.
