Wild Wild West: Saturday Expert Picks in the NHL

Last night's plays went 1-2 for a loss of 1 Unit. YTD sits at 13-5 for a profit of 10.29 Units. It's Saturday night on the Ice and Saturday night is Hockey Night. I am targeting two bouts on this slate. First we have a heavyweight tilt as the Toronto Maples Leafs visit the Edmonton Oilers and then we have some late night action as the Minnesota Wild visit the Seattle Kraken.

As far as my NHL picks, I look at shot on goal props, but only plus money looks, as the market is very volatile with stat corrections (sometimes days after the game has ended). Also, I'm a totals bettor (team and game). I am never afraid at looking at plus money underdogs. I love providing my insight as to the "Why" and I hope to provide some guidance to novice bettors of this great sport. "Spot" betting is huge on the ice, and this depends on teams travel schedules, goaltending matchups and splits following a win/loss, among may others.

Best Bet: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Edmonton Oilers Over 7 +106 Lucky Rebel
The Edmonton Oilers are looking to get back to the Stanley Cup final and they are off to a fantastic start. Edmonton made the controversial decision to hire Mike Babcock in the offseason and he has led them to a 8-1-1 start. But is not all him, most of Edmonton's success is and always will be hinged on Connor McDavid. Number 87 leads the NHL with 31 points (in only 10 games!) and is on pace for 260 points, which would shatter Wayne Gretzky's league record 215 points in a single season.
Edmonton is must see TV on a nightly basis as their games are very entertaining. The Oil are off a 6-5 shootout home win against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Edmonton is averaging a league leading 4.6 goals per game on the season (3.8 at home). Edmonton also owns the 2nd best Power Play in the league at a ridiculous 35%.
The Toronto Maple Leafs also made coaching change in the offseason, bringing in former Los Angeles Kings coach Jim Hiller. The Leafs are also off to a solid start at 6-4-2. Sniper Auston Matthew is fully healthy and 1st Overall pick Gavin McKenna is getting better every game. Toronto is averaging 3.6 goals per game this season (4.8 on the road). Toronto also owns the 3rd best Power Play in the league at 28%.
Goal Scoring Bonanza?
As you can see both of these clubs have plenty of offensive capability. Edmonton goaltender Devon Levi suffered an injury this week so Tristan Jarry is already confirmed to start, who is a very below average tendy, as evidenced by his .873 save percentage. The Leafs also have questions in net as Sergei Bobrosky and Anthony Stolarz have been anything but consistent. Series history also points to goals as 7 of the last 8 meetings have seen at least 7 goals with an average of 7.9 goals per game. 7 is a high number but it is warranted in this matchup, expect to see some fireworks in this all Canadian battle.

Best Bet: Minnesota Wild Team Total Over 3.5 +105 Lucky Rebel
The Minnesota Wild are in the midst of a 5 game Western road trip and are looking for their first win. The Wild suffered loses in the Alberta double as they dropped decisions to the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames in the first 2 games of the road trip. Despite those losses, Minnesota is off to a fine start the season. Tonight they pay visit to the surprising Seattle Kraken, who are off an impressive 5-3 home win against the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night. Seattle is due for some regression however, especially on the defensive end. The Kraks are 2nd to last in expected goals against (5 on 5) and are bottom 10 in high danger chances allowed. Minnesota's offense has yet to find consistency but they are top 10 in expected goals for and high danger scoring chances so they are getting their looks.
Series history also points to a positive outcome for the Wild. Minnesota has scored at least 4 goals in 5 of the last 6 meetings. With the Wild desperate to get a win on this trip and Seattle being a candidacy for regression, I'll back Minnesota here on their team total.
Best Bet: Quinn Hughes Over 2.5 SOG +110 Lucky Rebel

Minnesota defenseman Quinn Hughes is off to a fast start, especially in the shot on goal department. Hughes has cleared 3 shots on net in 8 of 11 games this season, averaging 3.1 shots on 6.1 attempts. Quinn is also producing on the road where he has cleared this in 5 of 7 games, averaging 2.9 shots on 6.4 attempts. He draws a solid matchup tonight as the Kraken are allowing the 4th most shots on goal to defenseman at home this season. With Minnesota likely to push the pace here, I expect Hughes to be active in the offensive zone and clear 3 shots on net.
