The two-time defending champs take the ice tonight at home. The Florida Panthers will host the Montreal Canadiens tonight at Amerant Bank Arena. This is the first of three matchups between the division rivals.
Florida is 21-15-2 this season and fourth in the Atlantic Division. They come into this game off a win over the Capitals yesterday. The Panthers are 7-3-0 in their last ten games, 13-8-2 at home, but only 3-5-0 in divisional games.
This Panthers offense has been buzzing this year despite not having Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov. They rank in the top ten of the league in goals scored, shots on goal and shooting percentage per game.
Defense is also pretty locked in for Florida. Their goaltending has been a bit leaky, ranking seventeenth in goals allowed per game. The Panthers are sixth best in shots on goal allowed per game and they have a solid penalty kill which they need as they commit over five penalties per game.
Goalie Daniil Tarasov is expected to get the start on the second game of a back-to-back. He is 4-6-1 this season with a 2.97 GAA and a .900 save percentage. He'll be by a Canadiens team that plays well on the road.

Montreal will try to get win and stay ahead of Florida in the standings

Canadiens forward Patrick Laine celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal against the Panthers.
The Canadiens are 20-12-6 this year and third in the Atlantic Division. They come into this game off a loss to the Lightning in a shootout on Sunday. Montreal is 5-2-3 in their last ten games, 10-3-5 on the road and 6-4-1 in divisional play.
Offense has been surprisingly good so far. They rank fifth in goals scored and fourth in power play conversion. Ranking in the bottom of the league for shots on goal per game isn't that bad when you have the second-best shooting percentage in the league.
Their defense hasn't been the best but holding it down. The goaltending has been leaky, ranking in the bottom of the league for goals allowed per game. Montreal's weak spot is committing over five penalties per game and only killing off 78% of them.
In net, we're going to see Sam Montembeault. Monty is 5-6-1 this season with a 3.65 GAA and a .857 save percentage. Let's check out the odds and get into the Canadiens vs. Panthers picks.

I think we see goals here. Both teams seem to find the net plenty, and we will only see mediocre goaltending. Their defenses should be a little lost with how fast both offenses will come. We're also getting great value on this over.
Both teams play well in their respective home and away records. We should see a back-and-forth battle between the two. Not sure who, but someone is going to get the scoring started early and kick off the spree.
I like Sam Bennett to get 3 or more shots on goal for -114. He's coming off a game hitting the number and recording a point. Bennett has hit the mark in four out of his last six games as well. This man is a menace on offense, and the team needs him to continue to lead.
Another play I'm leaning with is the Panthers to win. This is a great chance for them to tie it up for third place in the Atlantic with the Canadiens. The home crowd should be enough to help the Panthers win this game.
