Which what shouldn't be such a big game now is. The Montreal Canadiens will take on the New York Islanders as they try to keep their season alive. These two teams last met about two weeks ago and the Canadiens won 7-3.
Montreal is 47-23-10 this season and is third in the Atlantic Division. They come into this game off a loss yesterday to the Blue Jackets 5-2. The Canadiens are 8-2-0 in their last ten games and an impressive 23-8-8 on the road.
It's been a heck of a year for the Habs and Montreal is most definitely looking forward to being back in the playoffs. Lots to celebrate for this team as Cole Caufield surpassed the 50 goal mark the other night. Let's see if they play back tonight knowing their fate.
This team has some special talent and has delivered on offense. They rank seventh best in goals scored and second best in shooting percentage. Caufield's 50 goals all came in regulation 5-on-5 hockey and no empty netters. Shows how much they can play on offense.
Goalie Jacob Fowler is expected to get the start. He is 8-6-2 this season with a 2.53 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Looks like the Canadiens want to give starter Jakub Dobes a rest as they approach the playoffs.

New York needs to win and get some luck to make the playoffs

Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal vs. the Canadiens this year.
The Islanders are 43-32-5 this year and fifth in the Metro Division. They come into this game off a bad shutout loss to the Senators yesterday that was a must win game. New York is 4-6-0 in their last ten games and 22-15-2 at home this season.
Well, after yesterday's loss, they can just pack it in. The only chance the Islanders have of making the playoffs is winning their last two games, which are against the Canadiens and Hurricanes, AND they need the Flyers to lose their last two game.
Pretty sad situation that a four-game losing streak late in the season ended their season. Firing coach Patrick Roy came too late in the season and after the most was at stake. Such a shame rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer's season has to end this way.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin is expected to get the start. He is 29-23-2 this season with a 2.65 GAA and a .907 save percentage. Sorokin was once a Vezina contender, but after all his recent losses, that's a thing of the past.

It's a wrap for the Islanders. They looked terrible yesterday and played a team not even as good as today. They wind has left their sails as they too know they've buried themselves and will not make the playoffs.
Montreal is so good and even though the Islanders play good defense, they have a tired goalie and a deflated team. They needed to bring DeBoer in at least two weeks earlier than they did if they wanted to make a playoff push. The Canadiens are well on their way go a playoff run.
Give me Cole Caufield to have himself a day. He is coming off a stinker of a game and had a hat trick in the last game they played. I like for him to get his 4 or more shots on goal as well as potting one.
