The Hurricanes prevented a sweep with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Rangers in Game 4. With the game tied 3-3 late in the third period, Carolina defenseman Brady Skjei scored his first postseason goal on the power play to give the Canes a lead that they wouldn’t surrender.
Will Carolina live to fight another day? Or will New York put the final nail in the visitor’s coffin?
Let’s get into my scribbles for Game 5, which feature my Hurricanes vs. Rangers predictions and some of the best NHL bets that stand out in this contest.

Hurricanes vs Rangers NHL Game 5 Predictions & Pick (5/13)
The Hurricanes have momentum on their side after their hard-fought Game 4 performance, but winning tonight is a different story.
Madison Square Garden isn’t exactly the most welcoming environment. The Hurricanes lost their first two road games of the series and even though each defeat came by one goal, those losses could still play a psychological factor. It doesn’t help that Carolina is also 2-7 SU in its last nine road games against New York, having been outscored 30-23 on aggregate.
In fact, playing on the road in general has been tough for the Hurricanes, who are just 1-4 SU across their last five away games. Meanwhile, the Rangers are currently on a six-game winning streak at Madison Square Garden where they’ve outscored their opponents by an average of 1.8 goals.
The Rangers have been near-unstoppable at Madison Square Garden lately — especially in the playoffs.
The Rangers will have a terrific chance at winning if their power play gets back on track after going 0-for-5 in the last two games. The good news is that New York went 4-for-9 (44.4%) on the man advantage in Games 1 and 2 at MSG, whereas the Hurricanes failed to score on 10 PP opportunities.
It’ll be interesting to see if Carolina can finally get a good game from Frederik Andersen between the pipes. Not only has the Swedish goaltender played to a .897 save percentage through his first eight 2023-24 playoff starts, but he also owns a .874 SV% and 3.23 goals-against average in this series.
The Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin hasn’t been flawless, but he’s at least played to a 2.70 GAA and .925 SV% in the first four games. He also hasn’t lost at home in over a month, going 8-0-0 with a 1.99 GAA, .928 SV%, and one shutout in his last eight starts at Madison Square Garden.
Rangers G Igor Shesterkin hasn’t lost at home since the beginning of April.
Regardless of how close tonight’s game is, I’m taking the Rangers to emerge victorious. The Hurricanes are struggling to buy a win at MSG and have already lost twice on the road this series. As long as Shesterkin continues to play well, it’s going to be an uphill battle for any team to beat New York.
With that in mind, we’ll keep it simple by backing the Rangers on the moneyline. You can’t go wrong with Peter Laviolette’s team at -108 odds, so let’s lock that in before they shift closer to game time.

Best Hurricanes vs Rangers NHL Game 5 Player Prop (5/13)
We rode with this wager last week, so let’s go back to the Over on Vincent Trocheck’s 2.5-shot total (-141) as the best Hurricanes vs. Rangers Game 5 prop pick.
Trocheck is tied for the team lead with 15 shots on goal in this series, equating to an average of 3.8 SOG per game. Not only has the veteran forward finished with at least a trio of SOG in four of the last five postseason games but he’s also done so in nine of his last 14 games dating back to the regular season.
With the Over also being 6-2 in his last eight home games, it’s a no-brainer to back this Trocheck prop.
Best Hurricanes vs Rangers Prop Bet: Vincent Trocheck o2.5 Shots on Goal (-141)
