Analysis & Breakdown

Philadelphia Eagles

Push that Tush

The Eagles are 9-5 this year and despite once again winning the NFC East, they just haven't looked as dominant. The offense ranks 18th in points, 25th in first downs, 22nd in pass yards and 19th in rush yards. They've had trouble moving the ball and sustaining long drives, mainly because of their inefficiency on third down. Philly's converted just 37.4% of their third down chances this year, 23rd in the league.

Jalen Hurts hasn't been terrible but I'd argue he also hasn't been great this year. The reigning Super Bowl MVP is averaging just 209.2 pass yards per game, with a 65.2% completion rate, 22 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. The Eagles lost three of their last four games before their win against the Raiders and the offense looked anemic. They responded with a 31-0 shutout win over the Raiders and look to build on that this week against the Commanders.

Philly's defense has been really good this year. The team ranks 6th in points allowed, 4th in opponent redzone efficiency, 10th in pass yards allowed and 10th in opponent yards per play. They average 2.5 sacks per game but the defense has had trouble stopping the run. Philly ranks 22nd in opponent rush yards and they've given up the 4th most rushing yards to opposing RBs over the last four weeks.

This is the first of two matchups between the Eagles and Commanders, the second coming in Week 18. This is the matchup that matters and the one that could see Philly lock up the NFC North for the second consecutive year.

Doubt in D.C.

After an appearance in the NFC Championship last year, the Commanders came into this season poised to replicate even a bit of that success. Unfortunately injuries derailed their season. Jayden Daniels in his second year and the kid can't stay on the field. He's played in just half the team's games and that's 'played in' not 'finished'.

The team's top wide, Terry McLaurin, is about to play in his eighth game of the year in Week 16. Austin Ekeler entered the year as the team's top RB and he played in just two games. The team's had a ton of injuries on the defensive side and the lack of pass rush has just allowed opposing QBs to pick this secondary apart.

The Commanders rank 26th in points allowed, 28th in opponent redzone efficiency, 29th in pass yards allowed and 28th in opponent rush yards. The team's struggled to stop big plays and it's why they rank 31st in opponent yards per play. With so many things going wrong for the Commanders this year, it's tough to judge this year objectively.

The team's looked great when Daniels is on the field and Head Coach Dan Quinn looks like the guy for the job. It's not time to doubt the direction Washington's headed, it's time to focus on the off-season and getting into next year healthy. That being said, there's no way the Commanders are looking past the Eagles.

These two teams despise each other and I'm excited to watch them throw down here in Week 16.

Saturday's Best Bets

Saquon Barkley o79.5 Rushing Yards (+104) | Lucky Rebel

Saquon Barkley

The Eagles come into this week's matchup as a 7-point favorite on the road. The weather conditions are looking cold, clear skies and winds up to 19 mph. I don't think it changes Philly's gameplan too much, but this is a game Philly should be relying on the run. The Commanders rank 28th in rush yards allowed this year and have allowed opposing teams to average 4.7 yards per carry (27th).

Saquon's had a bit of a down year, averaging just 67.1 rush yards per game and 3.9 yards per carry. Lots of that stems from injuries along the offensive line and a new offensive co-ordinator on the sidelines.

All of that being said, this matchup is why we're targeting Saquon. The Commanders rank 27th in rush yards allowed to RBs this year and have had a few softer matchups over the last few weeks. This week they go up against one of the best in the league and despite his recent struggles, he ALWAYS kills the Commanders.

Saquon's played eight seasons in the NFL, all eight in the NFC East. He's played the Commanders 12 times in his career and he's averaging 100.7 rush yards per game in those 12 games. He's recorded 77+ rush yards in 8 of the 12 games and has a career yards per carry average of 5.6.

Saquon kills the Commanders.
