Arkansas vs. Memphis – September 20
Coming off a tough road loss to Ole Miss, the Arkansas Razorbacks look to bounce back on the road against Memphis. The Razorbacks showed flashes of dominance in parts of their Week 3 matchup with the Rebels, finishing with 526 total yards, averaging over seven yards per play. Their rushing attack was especially impressive, totaling more than 220 yards on the ground and averaging nearly six yards per carry.
The line in this matchup opened at 4.5 in favor of Arkansas on Sunday and has since risen to 7.5, still favoring the Razorbacks. I was able to snag Arkansas at 5.5 Sunday morning, missing out on the opening number. I do believe the Razorbacks are the stronger team in this matchup, and their performance against Ole Miss reinforced that belief.
Can We Trust Arkansas' Defense?
Defense remains a concern. Ole Miss was playing with their backup quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss, a former Division II standout from Ferris State, yet still put up 41 points. Chambliss completed over 72% of his passes, threw for more than 350 yards, rushed for 62, and accounted for three total touchdowns in his first Division I start. Arkansas will need to tighten up in the secondary if they want to keep Memphis in check.
The over is another lean in this game. While I expect Arkansas to win, I am skeptical their defense can hold the Memphis Tigers to a two-score margin. Memphis enters this matchup 3-0 SU and ATS, defeating Troy, Georgia State, and Chattanooga by at least 21 points each, while holding all three under 16 points.
Despite returning key offensive pieces-including two NFL-ready linemen, a former running back, and a new quarterback from Nevada-Phil Steele projects Memphis' offense as slightly down from last year. Their defense returns just one starter but adds a wealth of experience.
I am hesitant to trust Memphis in their first true test of the season, even at home. Both offenses, however, are potent enough to put up points. If the spread drops back under seven, Arkansas is my pick to win by a touchdown. Beyond that, the over is the smarter play, as both teams have the firepower to push this game past the total.
Lean: Over 62.5 (-110)
